I have taught in schools across NY state. I entered teaching after serving in the US Navy. I believe in discipline as well as having fun. I am a strong believer that the most dificult part of most exams (Regents in particular) is figuring out what the question is truely asking, as a result I emphasize vocabulary specific to the field of science being studied. I am certified in Earth/General science. I have taught Regents and general Earth Science as well as Regents and general biology. I have also taught 7th and 8th grade science which generally consist of life science (biology) or physical science (hodge-podge of physics, chemistry and earth science).
My tutoring approach would be to: 1) Have the student ask whatever questions they may have regarding the subject that is currently being taught in the students class at school, 2) Go over/quiz the vocabulary assigned in the previous tutoring session, 3) Explain wrong answers given in step (2), and 4) Assign vocabulary and or a few short answer questions to be prepared prior to next session.
In this process I would not oveerload the student who is struggling to keep up with work at school. For this student assignments for me would very brief and focused on supporting what is being taught in class. However for a student looking for enrichment and a broader or deeper view of whats being studied in class I would vary my expectations and assignment.
I wish you and your child good luck in all you academic adventures.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
