About Susan

In 2010, I retired from education after teaching for 33 years. While I have enjoyed the extra time I now have with my family and friends, I do miss the interaction with students. For most of my career, I was a Special Education Teacher. I developed individualized plans and strategies to ensure learning. I participated in a wide variety of Staff Development opportunities; continuing to learn effective teaching methods in the areas of Mathematics, Reading, Writing, and Technology.

I truly loved teaching, and had the philosophy that "All children can learn, but not in the same way" I found that individual and small group instruction did allow students to ask questions and to seek assistance when needed. Over the years, I did see an increase in student anxiety. There are many demands placed on young children. The extra preparation and practice does help to increase self-confidence. Students need to develop strong study skills, along with a solid foundation at an early age.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I am a certified educator, grades 1-6, and I'm certified in Special Education. I have 33 years of teaching experience in all Elementary Subject areas, including Math. As a second grade teacher, I worked to develop district-wide assessments and lessons for second grade students. I had opportunities to take Staff Development courses in Math Your Way and in the use of technology to improve instruction in Math.
