About Alexandra

Is English your second language? Do you wish you had more confidence in your ability to speak English at work or in college? Do you want to improve your ability to convey your thoughts in clear and succinct written English?

If so, then let’s work together. I am a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School and a member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. In my career as a lawyer, I worked in private practice as a trial and appellate lawyer, taught legal writing and research at Brooklyn Law School, and served at a senior management level in New York City government. I gained extensive public speaking experience, not only in court, but as a guest speaker at continuing legal education events and professional conferences at the local, state and national levels.

I currently teach in the Intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at a Community College, where I have also taught Business English, Accent on Fluency, English for Academic Purposes and a wide variety of ESL levels. I have coached students from over 30 countries on how to make effective and clear presentations in English on a wide variety of topics, ranging from international trade and business, to health care, technology and current events.

In addition to my teaching, I write a bi-weekly ESL blog for TESOL International that is read by ESL teachers all over the world. I have recently been invited to speak about my innovative approach to teaching ESL at several conferences sponsored by New York State TESOL, including the Applied Linguistics Winter Conference at Teachers’ College in March 2014.

When we work together, we will listen to and discuss real-world materials in English that you and I will choose from the Internet based on your specific interests. If you feel you need extra help with grammar, I will show you how to use a small handful of very practical Internet websites to practice and polish your ability to master the English system of verb tenses. If you need help preparing for a speech or a presentation, I will use my own extensive public speaking experience to coach you every step of the way and show you how to use your smartphone as a tool to improve your pronunciation and public speaking. Whatever your goals are, I will also teach you important strategies that you can use on your own time to powerfully accelerate your learning process.

I look forward to meeting you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I currently teach in the Intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at Westchester Community College, where I have also taught Business English, Accent on Fluency, English for Academic Purposes and a wide variety of ESL levels. I have coached adult ESL students from over 30 countries on how to make effective and clear presentations in English on a wide variety of topics, ranging from international trade and business, to health care, technology and current events.

In addition to my teaching, I write a bi-weekly ESL blog for TESOL International that is read by ESL teachers all over the world. I have recently been invited to speak about my innovative approach to teaching ESL at several conferences sponsored by NYS TESOL, including the Applied Linguistics Winter Conference at Teachers’ College in March 2014.

Public Speaking

I am a Harvard-trained lawyer who is a member of the bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. I taught oral advocacy skills at Brooklyn Law School to first-year to law students in the mid-1990s. As Special Counsel to the Deputy Commissioner for Foster Care for the NYC Administration for Children’s Services from 1998 to 2009, I gave speeches at local, state and national child welfare conferences, and taught dozens workshops for lawyers, social workers, judges and caseworkers. As an instructor at a community college’s English Language Institute, I have taught students from over 30 nationalities how to make effective and clear presentations in English on a wide variety of topics, ranging from international trade and business to current events. I presented well-attended workshops on self-directed learning strategies at the NYS TESOL conference in White Plains in November 2013 and at the NYS TESOL Applied Linguistics Winter Conference at Teacher's College on March 1, 2014.
