About Liam

My name is Liam, and I am currently a sophomore in college. This semester, however, I will be staying home to work. I have a lot of experience as a tutor. Getting consistently good grades throughout elementary, middle, and high school, I was often asked for help by my fellow classmates and siblings. By eighth grade, my middle school asked me to stay after school a few days each week to help tutor a six grader who was struggling. As I enjoyed the experience, in high school I worked as a tutor in my English department, helping proofread essays before students handed them in.

In my senior year, through our Christian Service program, I worked at MS331: The Bronx School of Science Inquiry and Investigation every Tuesday as a teacher's assistant in both an English and a Social Studies class, helping the kids to read, pay attention, complete assignments, understand the lessons, etc. I grew particularly close with one boy, Marlon, a poor kid who, at the time, lived in a homeless shelter with the rest of his family. Marlon struggled in school, particularly with paying attention and getting the work done, because he had ADHD and couldn't afford any medication. He didn't turn in most of his work and failed a fair amount of quizzes and tests. As a fellow sufferer of ADHD, I felt a strong connection with him, and I knew how hard it could be to try and focus and finish your work. I began to give Marlon tips about what I've done, ways that I've found help me concentrate and be productive, and it seemed to work. His grades had risen by the end of the year.

That was one of the most rewarding and enriching experiences I have ever had, and I hope I can offer your child the same knowledge and confidence I was able to give to Marlon. I will work closely with them, helping them to memorize their vocab, understand math concepts, etc. Whatever subject they're struggling with, I can help them conquer it.

I can help tutor your child for the SAT or ACT as well. You need all the help you can get in preparing for these tests. I should know, after taking a PSAT prep course between my sophomore and junior years of high school, I scored 30 points higher on my PSAT. Not only am I very familiar with the tests, having taken them recently, but I also scored very well on them (36 on ACT, 2270 on SAT). I can work with whatever guides or books you may already have, or I can provide the materials myself.

I hope I can help you and your child with whatever problems you may be having. I am an experienced, friendly tutor with a very flexible schedule. The price can be negotiated. I can provide a letter of recommendation upon request. As for Marlon? When I brought Easter baskets to him and his family's new apartment last spring, I found out he had just gotten into Cardinal Spellman High School.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
