About Nia

As the firstborn of two immigrant parents, Spanish was my first language. I was born and educated in Queens, NY. I obtained a double BA in Communication Disorders and Black Studies with a minor in Linguistics. I went on to get my MS in Speech-Language Pathology at Teacher's College, Columbia University in May 2013. I am now a bilingual speech therapist in an elementary school in Queens. I worked after school two days a week in a response to intervention program that aimed to help students progress in reading levels and comprehension.

I believe that all students have the potential to meet standards of excellence. While all students do not have the same access to resources, they all have the capability of learning and contributing something new and unique to the world. As a school based speech language pathologist, my goal is to help students with language delays and disorders to meet Common Core Standards in reading and writing so that they can access a quality education.

My passion for education is founded on a strong belief in the power of pedagogy, the method and practice of teaching. With over four years of tutoring experience, I have had the pleasure of working with a diverse group of students ranging from kindergarten to college students, those with learning challenges, to those who are English Language Learners. I always cater to individual students needs, while creating opportunities for growth. While my pedagogy begins with understanding and baselining student goals, I pride myself on not teaching for a quick fix. I looking at a student's educational foundation, gaining insight as to how they can improve their overall methods and attitude towards the material at hand.

With a 12-hour cancellation policy, my schedule is immensely flexible. My location is highly accessible as well, spanning from New York City to Long Island.

I look forward to helping you master whatever challenge you are facing!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

All of the academic goals I create for students are geared to help them meet Common Core standards. I also work a response to intervention program that focuses on helping students move up in reading levels per Fountas and Pinnell assessments.

Phonics

I do a lot of work in phonological and phonemic awareness skills with my students. I start with grapheme to phoneme (or letter to sound correlation) and move on to rhyming words, syllable blending and syllable segmentation. I have used different programs to remediate delays in phonics (i.e. sounds in motion and lively letters.)

Study Skills

I work as a school-based speech-language pathologist in an elementary school. I help students learn study and comprehension strategies to work more independently. I have also facilitated after-school programs to help students practice and better understand how to take state-wide exams in ELA and Math.
