I believe all learning should be fun and challenging! I have taught in New York, Texas and England where I have accumulated a wide variety of skills to help every child and adult, struggling to learn. Simple instructions, fun games and activities all lead to a positive self-esteem (and great grades!) as a result. School shouldn't have to be a struggle!
I have taught all academics for over 15 years. I also teach Spanish I and guitar lessons. I have a Master's degree in Education from Adelphi University, where I was awarded a full Graduate Assistantship. Plus, I have over over 20 credits in Special Education. I love reading and it is one of my specialties, along with: English, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, writing, study skills and comprehension. I combine a variety of learning strategies to meet all learners and I find the best way that each person learns. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a New York State Permanently Certified Public School Teacher in Nursery to Grade 6. I have taught 7 years in The Woodward School with students struggling with autism and other emotional, behavioral and learning challenges. I taught Kindergarten for 4 years as well as Third Grade in England. I have been a substitute teacher for Nursery, Elementary, Middle and High School. I have taught study skills, for students who get so nervous before tests, they can't remember their own names!
I have seen students go from a 54 on a test to a 94 and I have seen kindergarteners read on a 4th grade level.
Kids are amazing people and once they are confident and motivated, they CAN do ANYTHING.
I am a Permanently Certified Teacher N-6, and have taught phonics for 12 years. I have worked with several approaches in phonics and have mixed several together for optimal results.
I have made my own phonics charts, games and activities. I have made all four of my walls "phonics walls" so students could walk around the room, identify various letter combinations, sound them out, read words that have that specific sound and students get to add words to each one or draw pictures of the words and sounds and add them to the wall.
When phonics is combined with 'whole- word' approach, I have seen incredible results.
I have also attended "Make-It-Take-It" Workshops and have made a variety of "phonics - slide" learning tools, as well as "File-Folder Games", which I have been using for years and.. kids LOVE them!
I have passed the Praxis exam to become a certified teacher. I have been teaching with teachers who have recently passed it. I have been using Common Core Standards to help students in all academic areas.
