Elementary (K-6th)

My 20+ years as a Teaching Assistant in a k-5 Elementary School setting has prepared me to tutor in this area. It is important to master reading strategies, since reading comprehension is across the curriculum. Often, the answer isn't as difficult as understanding the QUESTION. My strategies for struggling students include; mastering the Dolch words(sight word lists) through game, rephrasing the questions, mastering basic math facts through skip-counting or song, reducing the number of questions per page, using words from the question in written responses... and so on. Positive reinforcement is crucial.

I am a NYS Licensed Teaching Assistant with the Corning Painted Post School District. As an elementary school employee, I have learned many methods to improve handwriting, even in Math computation. "Block" is now preferred over the "D'Nealin" method of days past. Options may include 3" pencils (To encourage a low grasp) foam grips (To aid in grasp) weighted pencil grips (to ensure pressure.) From another standpoint, highlighting a baseline of writing paper is helpful. Younger students may need lines drawn for 1:1 correspondence, or 1 word per line. This shows spacing. For math computation, vertically lined or graph paper helps the student see columns and place value. The habit of forming letters and numbers from the top down MUST BE ENCOURAGED for ease into cursive. Keyboarding is taught early on, for accuracy of written work in middle and high-schools, or for special needs students.
