I have experience teaching music in group and one-on-one settings. I am certified by New York State to teach all brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments, as well as ear training, sight singing, and general music. I place a strong emphasis on developing a student's inner ear through listening activities, as well as encourage the study of many different musical styles. I've found this approach produces a well-rounded musician, which is beneficial to a student's musical maturity as well as their academic success.
I have experience teaching instrumental lessons in a jazz, classical, and pops context, as well as experience directing large ensembles in both classical and jazz mediums. In addition, I frequently do freelance playing in many styles, allowing me to keep up with how today's musicians are playing. I also keep up with education journals and attend conferences and certification classes, in order to stay on the cutting edge of education theories and practices.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My experience teaching general music comes with a strong background in ear training and aural skills. I have studied solfege in standard, la-based minor, and fixed-do variations, and can use them interchangeably to find which works best for the student. My studies in Music Learning Theory have also prepared me to teach ear training through its segmented approach of building small and simple skills into strong aural abilities.
I have classroom experience teaching general music, utilizing Orff, Kodaly, and Music Learning Theory methods. I am certified in Orff pedagogy. I also have a background of further improvisational skills, which is a skill often used in general music pedagogies.
I am certified by New York State to teach saxophone. I have studied common practice pedagogies in saxophone, and method materials which have shown to be the most successful with students. I have experience teaching saxophone in both group and one-on-one lessons, with students ranging from beginner to advanced.
I have 14 years of experience playing the trombone. Trombone was my primary instrument in my undergraduate degree, and is currently the focus of my graduate degree. I often freelance on trombone, in classical and jazz setting. I have studied with the top musicians of high level orchestras, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, and Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. I was selected to perform in the 2010 All-State and All-Eastern Wind Ensembles, and was selected as a winner of the 2016 Duquesne Concerto Competition.
