About Matthew

My passion for teaching originated in my love for science. As a Natural Science major at Fordham University's College at Lincoln Center, my interest in chemistry was sparked because of an amazing experience that I had with a professor. If it wasn't for him, I would not be entering graduate school in the Fall, and I never would have discovered my passion. Keeping this professor in mind, I've worked to bring similar classroom experiences to students as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant at Fordham and, of course, through my nearly five years of tutoring.

Currently, I am working towards a Master's of Science degree in Chemistry at St. John's University in Queens, New York. My graduate coursework spans a wide variety of disciplines within Chemistry including, but not limited to, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry. Additionally, my current research interests sit at the intersection of Organic Synthesis, Inorganic Synthesis, and Physical Chemistry.

My specialties include experience in high school and college level Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biology, Genetics, and Psychology. Additionally, I am also willing to tutor other variations of chemistry and biology such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, etc.

For each tutoring session, my main goal is to challenge each student, but not leave them overwhelmed. I assign homework after each lesson that is designed to help identify areas that the student is struggling with. I also aim to emphasize individualized learning throughout my time with each student. Therefore, I provide frequent progress reports that help gauge the methods that are working and not working, and plan for future lessons.

Teaching is my passion and future career. Thus, I ask for frequent feedback from both students and parents. Before beginning tutoring with any student, I offer a free initial consultation meeting. During this meeting, we'll identify areas of focus and formulate a plan for each lesson moving forward.

I work to remain flexible with time. While I require 6-hour notice for cancellations, I am willing to offer a makeup lesson in the near future.

I am willing to travel to any location within New York City and Western Long Island that is most convenient for the student.

I look forward to hearing from you and assisting with your achievement in the sciences!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

Last May, I graduated from Fordham University with a BA in Natural Science. Currently, I am working towards a Master's of Science degree in Chemistry at St. John's University.

I have close to five years of one-on-one tutoring experience and about three years of classroom teaching experience. Both of these experiences have been in a variety of sciences, including General Biology, Molecular Biology, and Genetics.
