A highly qualified and experienced educator, I prepare students for the math, reading and writing portions of the SAT and ACT tests. I have enjoyed tutoring and preparing students for their college entrance tests for five years. I am a New York State certified teacher, and I have also spent twenty years in the classroom at different grade levels. I started as an elementary school teacher in Brooklyn, but most of my classroom experience has been teaching Middle School and High School Social Studies. I have also taught Adult Education classes.
I am skilled and experienced at tutoring SAT Math, SAT English, SAT Writing, ACT Reading, Writing, Math and Science, Integrated Algebra, Social Studies, Regents Test Prep, ESL for children and adults, and helping students find their voice and become better writers. Because my experience spans various grade levels and different school settings, I have become very flexible with meeting the changing needs of my students. I am a warm and caring teacher with a sense of humor, which helps put students learning something new at ease.
One of the most effective ways I help my students is by presenting comprehensible material that stimulates different learning styles. As a one-to-one tutor, I assess how a student learns best and create lessons that cater to that students' learning modality. All my students experience success. Sue was a dream to work with, easy to plan sessions and very flexible. As a teacher myself, I appreciate her methods for SAT tutoring. I believe my daughter gained a lot from working with Sue.
Sue is a fantastic tutor. She has worked with my daughter for a couple of months. She has motivated her and helped her learn. She takes a vested interest in her students. I would highly recommend her.
My son thinks Sue is a great tutor. She has taught him helpful tips and he feels that he has greatly benefited from her assistance.
Sue's method and explanations assisted my daughter in improving her grammar skills and overall understanding of the topics covered. My daughter was very satisfied and that in itself is an accomplishment. Thanks Sue!
Excellent tutor. She is a very positive influence on my daughter and always praises her accomplishments. Her grades are improving nicely.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The English portion of the ACT is very grammar-based, with a little bit of rhetorical skills as well. There are rules to follow, and then one must learn and incorporate those rules and practice! I guide students to identify grammatical errors and recognize what the test makers are looking for. All my students improve their English skills.
I am NY State Certified in N-6 Education. Documentation is available on request.
I am NYS Certified in TESOL, certified in September 2009. I have experience in teaching and tutoring in ESL.
As an elementary teacher, I have used phonics with first and second graders as one of the tools in their repertoire of skills to use in decoding words as they're learning to read. Although phonics doesn't help every student, and beyond second/third grade it is largely ineffective, I believe for some youngsters who are auditory learners it can be immensely helpful. I have many successful phonics lessons and activities to use with students.
I have been proctoring and preparing students for Regents exams for years. Because I am an ESL teacher, the state requires ESL students be given the option of having a regents in their native language, therefore I have become versed in different Regents subjects. I have prepared students for Global and American History, English, Integrated Algebra and Spanish. I have been a proctor in many other Regents subjects.
With a background in microeconomics and data analysis and over 20 years helping students understand and improve their math skills, I significantly raise ACT and SAT math scores for all my students.
It is not uncommon to have difficulty grasping abstract, analytical concepts needed to master math. In school, teachers have very little time to spend on each concept. Sometimes it seems as if you had just one more day to practice, the math concept would be seared in your mind; you would get it. I will help you practice your problem-solving, reasoning and analytical skills. You can get it.
As a history teacher and an SAT tutor, I assist students with their writing skills. On the college board exams, not only do students need to write effectively, but they need to assess sentence structure, syntax, grammar, transitions between paragraphs, etc. I give my students lessons that will help them score better on the multiple choice section of the SAT.
