About Perry

As an actuary and working in the insurance industry for 25 years I am looking to earn extra mony by tutoring prospective candidates. I took the actuarial exams 20 years ago but still am proficient in mathematics at all levels.

My tutoring methods include practice, practice and more practice. The idea is to master and understand the subject matter and not just memorize facts.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

My educational background includes a college degree in actuarial science and my business experience adds more insight. I also took many of these courses in high school as well. I have also helped my own kids study for the ACT when they were in high school. I have also taught ACT Math to 5 of my friends kids while they were studying and all of their grades improved 15%. My tutoring methods included having the kids do multiple test problems and then reviewing their notes to make sure they understood the subject material. very favorable feedback.

Actuarial Science

I am an associate of the Society of Actuaries and have worked professionally for 25 years.

Algebra 1

I am qualified to teach Algebra 1 because my educational background includes taking these courses in 10th through 12th grade, in college and also tutoring this subject when I was with the College of Insurance. In addition I have recently looked at the regents and the SAT tests and performed over 100 problems and scored in the 1-2% percentile. Algebra is right up my alley and have been very successful in helping many children in my neighborhood improve their grades and go very well on their tests.

Algebra 2

I am qualified to teach Algebra 2 because my educational background includes taking these courses in 10th through 12th grade, in college and also tutoring this subject when I was with the College of Insurance. In addition I have recently looked at the regents and the SAT tests and performed over 100 problems and scored in the 1-2% percentile. Algebra 2 has helped me improve my teaching methods because the subject is so multifaceted. I have printed out many old regents and textbook problems to explain these concepts to the many kids I have personally tutored, including my own.

Differential Equations

At college I took 2 courses in differential equations and also took this course in high school. Differential equations require mathematical insight on why 2 variables produce results. Learning differential equations is an art not a science.

Linear Algebra

I took high school and college courses and passed actuarial exams on linear equations. I enjoyed learning about linear equations because it relates to multi variables that need to be solved in order to arrive at the final answer. Linear algebra can be used in all fields of learning including engineering, science and computer science. It is the backbone to greater knowledge.

Logic

I took logic in college and have applied logic to many business problems. Logic is what makes us unique as human beings and we apply to the theory of logic our everyday thinking. Anyone who wants to master the subject of mathematics needs to think logically and think in ways that is unique to everyone else. My experience in the business world helps me describe and show how important logic is in the teaching of mathematics.

Prealgebra

I have qualified to teach PreAlgebra because the topics that are covered I have taken in high school(scored in the high 90's), college (scored with high 3's) and have used these topics in my successful business career as an actuary. My teaching methods include giving real life problems to the class and also giving many different types of problems so the similarities can be explained. I also taught this subject at the College of Insurance and was ranked very high among the students taking the course.

SAT Math

I am qualified to teach the SAT Math because I am very comfortable with the subjects covered and more importantly have many helpful "hints" and "techniques" that will help the student master and perform the required calculations. These techniques have worked on my own kids through their high school days and their grades improved 20%. I am also excellent in teaching the students how to prepare and answer these questions with well though out strategies that have been successful with other students.
