I believe in facilitating the student, not teaching at her. The student retains that knowledge which he "owns", i.e., when he discovers it on his own. In foreign language/ESL I employ the total immersion approach, where the student becomes fluent and facile with the language in the shortest amount of time. My greatest reward is in transferring my enthusiasm for the material to my students. Learning is a collaborative effort and a great adventure! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
