About Manya

Initially, languages did not come easily to me. My first year of middle-school Spanish, I was boggled by the idea that verbs conjugated and, once I started studying Latin, that nouns declined. It all seemed so...foreign to me.
But with the help of a very patient host family while on a ninth-grade exchange program in Mexico, I realized not only how useful speaking and understanding a foreign language could be, but how beautifully that language could express feelings English could not.

I started seeing the intrinsic beauty in languages, and delved into Latin and later Italian and Japanese. I loved learning about the origins of words, and I loved how every grammatical structure existed for a reason.
I loved making flash-cards and testing myself, and then testing myself out in the real world by talking with others in their language.

This love of languages opened doors for me: reading Virgil, Neruda, and Dante opened my eyes to other cultures and worlds.

My teaching philosophy is that languages are fun, and that learning to read, write, and speak a language can open doors--whether they lead to a job, a friendship, or a voyage abroad.
I like to immerse my students in the language that they are learning, so I encourage students to speak in that language and I speak to my upper-level students in that language; But I also encourage my students to recognize that fluency, not perfection, is the goal. Even in my native tongue I make mistakes!!
I love watching my students progress--they are like children learning to walk...and then joyfully run.

I understand what it is like to be a foreigner in a foreign land--where everything is so completely different and it seems that the same rules from back home do not apply.

But, through my years of living abroad and teaching ESL in Mexico, Ecuador, Japan, and the US, I have learned that, while cultures may differ, we all really do want the same thing: to be respected and trusted, and to trust that everything will work out.

My goal is to help my students feel comfortable enough to speak, and for them to know that I am not judging them--I am simply there to assist them as they build their vocabulary and delve into the culture and grammar of this new language.

Since I was also a language student--and, I consider myself a continual student, since I love learning new words and expressions--I understand what my students are going through.

And as a Spanish T.A. at Wesleyan University, I learned that the best way to help students learn was to make them feel comfortable.

I love watching students' vocabulary expand, their confidence grow, and their options open.
I encourage my students to give me feedback along the way, since I know that we all learn differently.

If you feel that I might be able to help you or your child learn a new language, I would love to hear from you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am intrigued by languages, particularly how a single language can convey a host of different ideas in a myriad of ways, all depending on the user's needs and desires.
I have taught English and ESL in the US and abroad, and I always enjoy watching my students' vocabulary, understanding, and self-confidence increase.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught ESL in a high school in Japan, at Rennert Bilingual in NYC, in the local library in Mexico, and at an adult education school in Ecuador.
While I love grammar and vocabulary, I find that the most important element to teaching is making the students feel comfortable. I know from experience that speaking a new language can be intimidating, especially when one is living in a foreign country--but it can also be empowering and liberating when one can use the language to get across one's point, to understand another person, and to make friends.

Grammar

I am fascinated by languages, and by grammar in particular. I love how there are grammatical rules, and yet there are a myriad of ways in which one can communicate a single sentiment.
I have taught ESL and Spanish both in NYC and abroad, and I love watching my students progress in both ability and self-confidence.

Spanish

I love languages, and I love Spanish in particular because it has opened me up to so many wonderful experiences.
Speaking, reading, writing, and understanding Spanish has enabled me to meet amazing people here in NY, as well as throughout my travels in Mexico, Ecuador, and Spain; It has allowed me to read first-hand accounts by authors in their native language, and to listen to fascinating podcasts.
When I was a Spanish TA at Wesleyan University in CT, and when I taught Spanish in a public high school in Japan, the best part was watching students' language abilities grow, and with it their self-confidence.
