About Sara

Expert Writing Coach, English Tutor: NYU Educ MA; Author & Editor

With a Master's degree from New York University School of Education, I have professional publications credits including 30 nonfiction books, and offer experience as educator for students of all levels and backgrounds in workshops and classrooms.
My books include guides to study skills, test-success, classroom tactics, and online learning, as well as life- and time-management.

Practical Approach to Clear Communication:
In both broad scope and "minor" details, the whole purpose of clear writing is to be sure the reader - whether classroom teacher or treatise editor - understands what we want to say, so organization, expression, and punctuation details are all important!

Teaching Style:
In my experience, the general approach that works best with both individuals and groups is to form a cooperative bond that makes the effort more a “we” project than a “you-must-do-this” one. With the student, we set short-term and longer term goals to be achieved step-by-step, so that the student learns about the process of learning and studying, rather than simply making the “grade.” In general, I follow the steps, including “preview- view- review,” outlined in my book, How to Do Your Best on Tests. I consistently offer praise and positive reinforcement, rather than criticism or negativity; when errors or setbacks occur, the effort is praised, and we work to learn from the mistake – including to learn why it happened. When we run into blockages, we play with new ideas and find alternate approaches that achieve the result. This ongoing process succeeds, with both younger and older students, in not only raising the grade average, but also enhancing self-esteem and self-confidence.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

As the author of several books, for young people, college students, and adults in career- and life-management, I have been able to develop and implement simple and effective techniques for planning and pursuing ideal work lives.
