I love to learn new things, and I love to share what I know in the service of my students. I am an experienced educator with a passion for creating lessons that engage my students' natural curiosities and excite their desire to solve problems. I believe in student-centered instruction tailored to my students' specific needs, and I think that instruction should provide practical experience building skills and acquiring knowledge in authentic contexts that can be used every day in any subject and beyond.

My educational background is in English Language Literature (B.A.), and Secondary English Education (Grades 5-12) with a concentration in Literacy (M.A.T.). Basically, that means that I can help struggling readers and writers improve in measurable, observable ways, which in turn enables them to perform well on written and reading tasks across the curriculum and in real life.

Reading

I have been educated at the graduate level as a literacy specialist who can assist struggling readers and writers. I have experience helping students to develop and improve their reading skills - from close reading strategies that enhance comprehension, to finding the main idea and supporting details in a text; from defining the author's purpose or intention for writing, to Vocabulary comprehension and expansion. I own an extensive library of professional texts that provide research-based, proven effective reading strategies for every level of reader. Other areas of expertise include note taking skills and annotations for making sense out of what's being read.

I have completed graduate level classes in English Language Arts and Literacy; I have a bachelor's degree in English Language Literature, as well. I have had my writing published on several blogs, and in the past I have written detailed procedural tutorials for co-workers learning new technologies. I enjoy helping others learn new things and improve their skills, and my student-centered methods of instruction are focused on meeting my students' immediate needs while they are learning and applying that knowledge to academic tasks.

SAT Reading

I have over four years of professional experience teaching Reading and Writing. As a good portion of the SAT falls into these two categories, my areas of expertise align well with having the necessary knowledge to coach students on how to effectively read, interpret, and analyze complex texts, and to be able to write about their reading.
Writing,

Writing

My Masters teaching program concentration is in English Language Arts with a focus on Literacy development, which includes Reading and Writing. I prefer student-centered instruction as a method of teaching writing; mini-lessons and writers' workshops are my main methods of instruction while my students are learning the writing process, and I give instantaneous feedback with a focus on tips for improvement during the writing process. My students learn how to construct the four different types of texts: expository - research papers, essays, and any other writing in which the author's pupose is to inform the reader or to explain a particular topic; persuasive - writing that seeks to convince the reader to adopt a certain position on a topic; descriptive - writing that describes a procedure, or how to do something; and narrative - writing that tells a story. I instruct my students in planning, outlining, drafting, revision, and editing techniques as they perform writing tasks, so that their final product is the best it can be. Under my instruction, students will also learn proper citation techniques, how to construct a Works Cited - either in M.L.A. or A.P.A. format, and how to avoid the pitfalls of plagiarism and academic dishonesty in their writing.
