About Jean

I am a teacher with 26 years of experience in both special education and secondary English, having permanent NYS certification in both and have two Masters degrees in Education from Syracuse University.

I just recently retired from the North Greenbush CSD after teaching high school resource at La Salle Institute in Troy for eight years. Before that, we lived on the west coast for 10 years and worked as a special education teacher in both the San Francisco and Seattle areas.

I have found that I miss teaching and problem solving with older students a great deal and feel that I still have a surplus of energy and ideas and strategies to foster academic competence and help students navigate whatever skills they’ll need to be successful.

During my teaching career, I have taught English 7-12 and have re taught almost all subjects in resource in addition to study skills and test taking strategies. I have developed review strategies for many of the regents exams as well as algebra and geometry content. I work with students, emphasizing their strengths and building their confidence by modeling and repeating, as well as using visual aids or whatever might be required to understand the concepts they might be struggling with.

My original certification was in English 7-12 and I taught middle and high school English for 8 years before I became a special education teacher. Then, as a high school resource teacher, I worked with students to improve their reading and writing skills in order to pass the English regents and to prepare them for the college writing experience. My focus was to have the students not only be able to write a cogent and coherent essay or paper but also to help them find their own voices. I used many methods such as cognitive map planning, think and pair share in reading the piece of writing and editing and proofreading. In reading skills, I reinforced skills such as surveying the text, make predictions, annotating and questioning the text, analyzing rhetorical structures and using the texts to support arguments. All of these reading and writing essential skills can be applied to any tutoring situation.

Even though I have a Special Education/Secondary English double certification, for many years, I have worked on test taking and writing strategies involving the Global and US History and Government regents exams as well as teacher constructed tests. Some of the many strategies that I’ve developed are DBQ document organization, thematic essay templates for organization and practice, and “use the test” to take the test on multiple choice questions. Also, in many situations, my students have worked on the basic secondary toolkit for social studies: supporting question, formative task, and use of sources and documentation.

As a secondary special education teacher for years, I have supported many students who were ADHD. I found that, for the majority of them, organizational and study skills were the most challenging and were roadblocks to succeeding in their classes. I worked with classroom teachers as well as my students, using many methods and primarily focusing on note taking skills, homework organization, classroom material organization, test taking skills, and student advocacy training to learn to address discussing challenges, accommodations, and solutions with their teachers.

If you're looking for a private teacher who has years of experience in helping students succeed in all areas of high school or middle school, then I think you would enjoy working with me, learning new skills and strategies that you can apply to all areas of school. All of my students passed all 5 regents exams in order to graduate with much review and test taking practice that I provided in resource and pushing in to English and history classes. Please contact me to learn more.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have been a high school resource teacher for many years and worked on improving executive functioning with my students: organizational and study skills as well as increased competence in test taking skills. I have used many common sense, practical solutions to help my students function more effectively in the school setting.
