Union College (Economics)
Union Graduate College (Master's)
I have always loved mathematics and even though I majored in economics at Union College, I have just completed my MAT (Master's in the Art of Teaching) degree from Union Graduate College.
While pursuing my MAT degree I have had the opportunity to complete a full year internship at Schalmont Middle School setting last year. There, I worked under the supervision of a National Board Certified Teacher and worked with 3 classes of eighth grade students. I helped design tests, quizzes, homework worksheets, guided notes, study guides, review activities, etc. My classes were very diverse so I incorporated differentiation strategies to make the course materials accessible to students of every ability level. This year, I worked as a student teacher from September to December at Troy High School, and taught two sections of geometry and one section of Algebra 1. Students in those were in 9th, 10th and 11th grade. I think it is with these diverse experiences that I consider myself qualified to be an effective math tutor.
Finding different ways to solve a math problem is why I love math and I try and bring that to each and every tutoring session. Given my teaching experience, I will also be able to assess, determine which topics need to be reviewed, give practice when it is necessary, and provide appropriate feedback.
I conduct myself as a professional and hold a 16 hour cancellation policy, but I am not unreasonable. I know sometimes unexpected things come up, but I would like to be notified with as much time as possible. This way, we can try and make plans for a make up tutoring session.
I believe feedback is very important to my practice as an aspiring teacher and tutor, so often I will ask for feedback.
It is important that students feel safe and comfortable while working with me. Therefore, I have found that working at a local library works best for tutoring, but I am happy to travel to another location of your choosing if that is more convenient for the student. James has been very successful thus far in clarifying the math concepts for understanding, guiding difficult homework and preparing for tests. We are very happy and will continue the service.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
