About Cristina

Hello! My name is Cristina and I'm a 25 year old tutor in the Capital Region. I tutor in various subjects such as Japanese, ESL, and English (reading, writing, vocabulary, etc.). I tutor students from grades K-12, and College level. I also have experience with adult learners as well. I like make my lessons fun, interactive, and easy to understand for all age brackets.

I'm currently a student at the University at Albany in my Senior year. I'm a double major in Japanese Studies, Linguistics, and a minor in English. I already possess my Associates Degree from a two-year college, focused in English and Business. I have been tutoring students of all ages for over three years around the Capital Region, and I absolutely love it! As a Linguist, I have a fascination for understanding how humans develop and acquire knowledge. I enjoy tutoring because it's fun and fulfilling for me, as well as a great way for me to research how language acquisition works for people of all ages.

When it comes to tutoring, every student's needs and wants are different. Depending upon the student's needs is how I tailor our sessions. If willing, homework is assigned and expected to be completed by the next tutoring session. Tests and quizzes are given as well. All of this helps with the students learning retention and makes the material thought provoking and engaging. However, some students find that merely talking through the material helps them more than completing assignments. You set the pace!

I'm currently accepting new students on Wyzant, so please feel free to message me. I check e-mail daily, so if you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate. I have various rates and times available for tutoring both online and offline.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cooking

My senior year of high school, I attended BOCES and gained two certificates of completion as well as my ServSafe Certification for Culinary Arts. I completed both Culinary Arts I and II, and have over five years worth of experience working in both Corporate and locally owned restaurants.

English

I have taken over three years of English course work in my academic career and have an overall GPA of 3.8. I have been an avid reader and writer since I was a child. During my High School years, I scored in the top 1% in the state for English on all Regents Examinations.

ESL/ESOL

I'm currently working towards a Master's in TESOL. I'll be attending graduate school for a combined MA in TESOL and Communications. I have experience in tutoring many foreign exchange students on campus.

Japanese

I'm a Japanese Studies major and have spent much of my youth studying the Japanese language and culture. I'm an advanced speaker and working my way towards the Near-Native Level examination. I currently tutor Japanese on campus and off with students of all ages. I use the Genki Textbooks for all tutoring as well as other outside sources and materials.

Public Speaking

I have several courses in Public Speaking Completed while I pursued my Associates Degree. I have experience in Corporate Public Speaking, Management, and Presentation based public speaking. As a Linguistics Major, I have also taken courses in how to project, control, and use tone in effective ways when speaking.

I have been an avid reader and writer since I was a child.

Vocabulary

Through reading and studying, I have amassed an extensive vocabulary and can help tutor students in ways to use words in a new way.
