My name is Nicholas M. and recently I had been serving as an Elementary Teacher. By having taught various grade levels in Massachusetts, Mexico, and New York, I have gained a wide range of teaching experience working with numerous ages, cultures, and socioeconomic statuses. Most recently I served as a Pre-K teacher at the Studio School in Upper West Side Manhattan, and as a Preschool teacher in Clifton Park, New York. These two positions, in addition to my experience as an ESL and Elementary teacher, have helped to vastly widen my understanding and knowledge in regard to developmentally appropriate practices.
I graduated Cum Laude in 2005 from the University at Buffalo with a B.A. in Social Sciences-Interdisciplinary, but decided to set myself on a different career path, noticing the limited job market in Health and Human Services. It was then that I enrolled in a Teacher Certification Program at Westfield State University, the oldest teaching college in the nation. In 2008, I graduated with a certification in Elementary Education, and a final G.P.A. of 3.76. The Massachusetts State Certification Program is extremely rigorous, making it accepted in forty-three states and U.S. territories. I have also received a Florida K-6 Professional Certification and a New York State licensure in Childhood Education 1-6.
In regard to my varied approaches during instruction, I seek to first analyze the child’s understanding and knowledge preceding the initiation of the lesson. This in turn helps reveal specifically what needs to be focused on during the lessons. Assessments are giving frequently, both informally and formally, and seek to expedite the learning process and prevent unnecessary tutoring sessions.
My varied positions have enabled me to gain a broad base of experience. I bring a passion for student success and dedication to excellence, and would utilize my skills and experience to serve as an asset for you and/or your child. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Much of my teaching career has revolved around the grade levels of K-6. With students of these age levels being of my primary expertise, I have often focused on careers that involve these age groups. I currently hold an Advanced Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education 1-6 in the states of New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts. With New York's education system being venerated by many, the teaching certificate is accepted by forty-three U.S. states.
I have an ESL certificate and an Advanced Teaching Certificate.
Teaching phonics has always been a focal point of my English lessons. I have taught phonics to students of all ages, ranging from university students in Mexico City to Pre-K children in Manhattan. By being placed in classes of such a diverse age range, I feel my teaching methodologies have broadened as well.
