In prior employment as a commercial property inspector, I was responsible for photographing street scenes, building exteriors and interiors, and any deferred maintenance items. I can introduce students to the basics of digital photography, including scene composition, saving and printing the photographs, and managing computer files. I can also teach them to insert picture files into Microsoft Office documents, attach them to e-mail messages or upload them to Web sites.

Tax Accounting

I am an experienced user of the Intuit tax preparation package TurboTax. I can guide new users in preparing their federal and State taxes for situations ranging from Form 1040-EZ to Form 1040 itemizing deductions and with Schedules A, B, C, D, and/or E. I am also able to help with either paper or electronic submission of returns. I understand the rules for reporting self-employment income (Schedule C) and rental income (Schedule E). I can explain how to set up depreciation calculations and claim depreciation for real estate, vehicles and other property. I can provide guidance in claiming college expense credits, child care credits, the earned income credit, and other credits. I also help students set up filing systems to simplify future years' tax preparation. My role is not to provide tax advice but to help new TurboTax users organize their tax information, enter it into the software package, and evaluate whether or not the resulting return is ready for filing. The package itself compares the return to national averages and assesses audit risk. Professional tax advice is available through Intuit.

ESL/ESOL,

I have had success tutoring speakers of English as a second language, particularly native Spanish speakers. I understand the difficulties of learning English and can help my students with speaking, reading, and writing, including subcultural idioms and slang. We also discuss differences in sentence structure and organization. Particularly with Romance languages, we work on recognizing words with common roots in order to build vocabulary mastery. In travels throughout the U.S. and eight other countries, I have personally surmounted language barriers with native speakers of Spanish, French, Flemish, German, Czech, Bulgarian, Chinese and Hindi. These experiences help me communicate with students at all levels of English use.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th),

Elementary (K-6th)

When working with students at the K-6th level, most of all I am sharing my own joy of learning and teaching them how to learn. I am certified to tutor reading, writing, English, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, study skills, elementary math and elementary science. I enjoy working with children of all ages and tend to make the lessons seem more like play than school "work." My students like my real-life examples, funny drawings, and tips on how to remember different facts (mnemonics).

Reading

I love books and reading! I'm able to share the joy of reading with almost anyone by keying on his or her personal interests and building from there. My habit of daily reading for pleasure has helped me academically, professionally and in my personal life. Reading expands my vocabulary, makes me an "automatic" speller, allows grammar and sentence structure to come naturally to me, enhances my test-taking ability, and helps me with both written and verbal communication. I enjoy sharing the powerful life tool of reading with all my students.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Studying and test-taking have always come relatively easily to me. More importantly, I have the ability to help students from all academic backgrounds improve their study skills at the college, secondary and primary levels. I tutored at the South End Community Center in Albany when I was in high school, acted as the graduate assistant for statistics while in graduate school, and now teach college and tutor statistics online for Strayer University as well as offering one-on-one tutoring for Wyzant. My approach is tailored to the student's individual needs and includes help with time management, note-taking, test preparation, use of Microsoft Office software, Web searching, and research skills.

Yoga

I learned a gentle basic yoga routine at Hot Yoga in Washington, D.C., and have been using it successfully for seven years. This 20-minute routine is unique in that it is done fully on the mat so it is non-impact for feet and ankles. The routine is ideal for older or overweight people to obtain the stretching, oxygenating and meditative benefits of yoga without over-exerting themselves. One must be able to get down to floor level and pull oneself back up (with the aid of furniture if necessary!). As with any physical activity, it's advisable to check with a doctor before starting yoga lessons.

Hire Marilyn!

I found Marilyn's tutoring style to be unconventional with the use of silly examples BUT VERY HELPFUL and it definitely makes it stick!!

Kiernan, 3 lessons with Marilyn

Excellent knowledge

Marilyn and I have just had our first lesson, she represented her skill set very accurately. It is apparent upon meeting her that she is patient and kind, ideal traits in a tutor. Already I can tell she has a talent for explaining complex subject matter, looking forward to my next session quite a bit!

Great tutor!

Marilyn is a great tutor. She is thorough, punctual, and makes sure you understand the material. Marilyn tutored me for a master's level statistical project. I had no idea what to do, and after meeting with her I understood the material and received an A on the project. I highly recommend Marilyn!

Melissa, 3 lessons with Marilyn

Couldn't ask for a better tutor, thank you.

She is knowledgeable. She really took the time to understand me and how I work best. Friendly and easy to spend the time with. She is concerned that you understand everything before moving on. Thank you so much.

Great tutor

She worked very well with my son. He needed test strategies for the SAT and she gave him great techniques to try and made the sessions fun. We would highly recommend Marilyn as a tutor.

Uses good analogies that help me understand the material better

I'm taking Quantitative analysis. It is a required course for my degree. Statistics is difficult for me. Marilyn's experience and good teaching skills has helped me to understand basic statistical concepts better. This is an online course which makes it difficult for me to grasp the concepts compared to a classroom. It is nice to sit down with Marilyn to discuss the assignments and identify the correct reference materials to use so that I can complete the assignments.
