About Matthew

I have a degree in Biochemistry from SUNY New Paltz. And I also have a Massage Therapy degree from Finger Lakes School of Massage. I became a tutor because I remember what it was like to be a struggling student. Getting a B or a C on a test isn’t intrinsically emotional, but if you expected to get an A+, it will likely cause distress.

In high school, I worked my way to honors classes, then AP classes, and following high school I have just graduated with a degree in biochemistry. For me to accomplish my academic career I had to research study skills and find ways to optimize cognitive function.

During my tutoring sessions the student and I develop mental heuristics and ways memorizing vast amounts of information quickly. We also go over practice problems and create stories out of academic information to make learning more fun. I also strongly believe in the ability to teach back the information once they have learned it. It has been shown that if the ultimate intent is to learn the information for social reasons, the ability to teach it back, the student will inevitably do better on the test.

Tutors go beyond helping their students keep up with course work or gaining an academic advantage. A good tutor will motivate a student to learn and instill self-confidence. This is what I aim to do in the subjects of biology, chemistry, and anatomy. My goals are to create a feeling of growing comfort in my students so they can relax and start to enjoy learning. During a test I want the right answers to jump out at them. Contact me if you find yourself struggling in the sciences.

I hold myself to a high standard. For that reason, I often ask for feedback, and I never bill for a lesson in which the student or parent is not completely satisfied with my tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I hold a degree in Biochemistry and tutored at the college level. I have maintained an interest in meta-cognition and executive function. The one-on-one tutoring atmosphere enhances both these psychological attributes that are important to learning as well as creates a social aspect that makes learning more enjoyable.
