Hello! My name is Matt. With over 17+ years of experience as a student, I've learned what makes for effective studying. At Cornell University where I graduated magna cum laude in mechanical engineering and met pre-med requirements, I struggled to do well in multivariable calculus my freshman year. (If you have ever taken the class, you might be sympathetic.) Other students had more experience with concepts from previous classes in high school, so I fell behind and under-performed on several exams during the class. I was bright and worked harder than many of my classmates - what was going wrong? Turns out, I wasn't studying effectively. Next semester, I changed my studying habits and achieved just under a 4.0 GPA. In the following years, I honed my studying skills for different subjects and types of learning, drawing from principles of cognitive psychology. With my students, I focus on sharing these skills to help them succeed not only in their immediate classes but also in higher education and beyond.

That said, my tutoring style focuses on accommodating a student's learning style and doing lots and lots of practice problems. Whether you are a visual learner, a kinesthetic learner, or an auditory learner (or a combination of these), I will adapt to your learning needs. But I will also encourage students to try new learning strategies if their current methods seem ineffective or inefficient. Above highlighting and summarizing information, practice problems have been shown to be one of the most effective study tools, and there is data to support it.

Algebra, calculus, physics, chemistry, and biology are my strong suits. However, feel free to ask about other subjects I'll give you an honest answer about my competency in that area.

On a personal note, I love playing soccer, improvising on the piano, baking bread, and going on food adventures with friends. Also, I'm also learning Spanish through Duolingo at the moment. If you have any tips for learning Spanish, it would be much appreciated. Lastly, if you have any questions for me, feel free to reach out. Adios!

As a private tutor, I have helped a student maintain a 90s average and score within the top two students in their class on an exam. I know how to increase complexity in practice problems without losing comprehension and how to prepare students for upcoming tests. I am also able to correct conceptual errors as they arise and offer intuitive explanations for why certain operations are allowed or not.

Test Preparation

MCAT,

MCAT

I took the January 2019 MCAT and scored a 518 (132/128/129/129). My average AAMC practice test score across Fl1, Fl2, Fl3, and Sample was a 522 with no section ever below a 129. I focus on spaced-repetition for memorizing facts and using simple strategies to work through passages. For CARS, I encourage students to read broadly every day for fun, so they remember what it's like to engage with a text. Lastly, practice, practice, practice. This test requires thousands of practice problems and passages.

A very helpful tutor

I am very happy because my son likes the way Matt is tutoring him. He really admires his knowledge and effort to help him. It took me too long to pick the right tutor for him. Fortunately, I found the right person. Thank you, Matt.
