About Michael

I have completed several internships working with students with disabilities and students in general education since high school. I have worked with the students long term and saw major success. I have been assisting several local schools this semester for my graduate class fieldwork. In addition to this fieldwork, I have been tutoring students for 6 weeks, one session a week for two hours in math and literacy. I am very familiar with the Common Core Standards and the different curriculum being used in the some schools. I am also working at a learning center tutoring students from pre-k to middle school in English and Math.

I feel all students can learn and will learn if provided the right tools and strategies to succeed in their educational career. I would like to help your child achieve academic success!

I am a certified New York State General Education teacher for grades 1-6.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have several years of working experience with students with ADD/ADHD. I provide a fun and multi-sensory approach for learning and keep the students focused on their academics. I give breaks if needed, and those breaks usually are playing an educational game to build on skills that they need additional help in. One to one sessions help students with ADD/ADHD. Also, if the student loses focus on one subject area, I switch to another subject to keep them interested and go back to the other subject.

Autism

I have completed student teacher and observational hours working with students with autism in District 75; the Special Education District of NYC. I have used First/Then charts with my students and used PECs in different lessons. I have created lessons based on a routine and schedule to assist with students with autism succeed.

Common Core

I have been working with the Common Core Standards and Curriculum for several years. I have been using the NYS Engage Math and English Curriculum. Also, using the curriculum, I have differentiated my lessons if students need more detailed and/or another way to learn the information in order to reach the Common Core Standards. All students on any level can master the Common Core Standards.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been working with students in Kindergarten through 6th grade for over 5 years in different educational settings. I have worked in urban and suburban schools and in general education and special education classrooms. I have guided small group lessons in all subject areas. I have differentiated instruction in all subject areas for the different students in classroom.

Handwriting

I am trained in Handwriting Without Tears handwriting program. This is a multi-sensory approach to learning how to write letters and words in the correct formation and building fine motor skills. I have been working with students in Kindergarten through 6th grade for over 5 years in different educational settings.

ISEE

I have been working with several students on preparing for the ISEE assessment. Sessions all focused on vocabulary development, reading strategies, math skills and fluency and test taking strategies. I use a multi-sensory approach; computer testing, flash cards, iPad apps, and using the white board to practice math problems.

Phonics

I have administered several formal and informal assessments to assess phonics, (oral reading, fluency, comprehension, etc). I have guided instruction based on the assessment data in phonics and focused on the letter sounds (short/long vowels, vowel teams, vowel consonant e, r controlled, word families, etc). I am familiar with whole language approaches and different intervention approaches (Preventing Academic Failure). Phonics should be taught based on the students' knowledge and until mastered. I always use a multi-sensory approach when teaching phonics.

Special Needs

I have completed over 80 hours of fieldwork and internships in special education classrooms. I have worked in different settings in special education both urban and suburban.

I've worked with students with learning disabilities, students with autism, and students with severe emotional disturbances. I have used different behavior management systems with different students and created differentiated work for students with disabilities. All the work that is differentiated meets the Common Core Standards. Special need students learn in different ways and at times the instruction needs to be differentiated to meet their learning needs. For example, I always use a multi-sensory approach to learning and whatever learning style the student needs and requires.

Study Skills

Study skills are a very important strategy and tool to use. I've taught students in various academic areas to understand information they were going to be tested on. I use different methods, from basic flashcards to Look-Say-Cover game to drawings/writing on post its. Study skills are based on the students learning preference and is always interactive and used in a fun and creative way.
