Hello, parents and students. Thanks for considering me as a tutor.

Although I'm a NYS certified teacher with a Masters degree and years of classroom experience, that's just part of who I am as an educator, a mentor, and a learning partner.

I'm mature, seasoned, and as my students like to remind me, "old." (I'm 51 as of this update.) My pre-teaching background includes editorial and promotional work in book publishing, and I am still a professional writer and editor. (Hear that, high school...

(Hear that, high school students?)

And ... I'm a parent. My three children are 21, 19, and 16, and I've seen them all through the ups and downs of public school education. (Not to mention helping them with their college essays.)

So how can I help YOUR child?

* Writing at all levels. I am a writer by trade and training, and I can bring out the best in even the most reluctant writers. (I promise I hate the EngageNY ELA modules as much as you and your children do.) I stress the difference between written language and spoken/social media language, and I work with children on solidifying their ideas before micromanaging their mechanics. (Oh don't worry, I'll do that too!) No more tears over that 6th grade research paper. SAT Reading and Writing, AP essays, IB exams, and college applications. If it uses words, I'm your guy.

* Math up through 8th grade. The state math curriculum manages to be boring and overly complicated at the same time, but there is hope! As someone who had a fair bit of math phobia as a kid and a teen, I enjoy pointing out the light at the end of the tunnel--and how to get there.

* General study skills, organization, confidence (SO much of it is about confidence!), attitude, and honest, constructive responses to the age-old question, "Why do I have to learn this?"

Younger kids respond to my silly sense of humor, while teens appreciate that I recognize their strengths before I try to target their weaknesses.

I promise you this: your child will enjoy working with me--no matter what we're studying and no matter how hard it is--and that is half the battle.

All best,

Matt H.

Before becoming a teacher, I spent 17 years in the publishing industry as an editor, writer, web content developer, and promotion manager. All of these positions demanded an eye for detail and consistency in text. I bring those skills and experiences to bear in my teaching and tutoring.

I have permanent/professional NYS certification in Childhood Education (grades 1-6) and an MSed (Long Island University.) I'm a former 5th grade teacher (Port Chester), with additional leave replacement experience (Hendrick Hudson, Ossining, Edgemont). I hate Common Core as much as you and your kid do, but we can do it together. I'm patient, fun, flexible, and I'm also a sleepaway camp Assistant Director, so I NEVER run out of energy.
Elementary Math,

Elementary Math

I hold permanent/professional New York State certification in Elementary 1-6 Education and have taught and tutored Math at the Elementary and Middle School levels since 2008. I specialize in clarifying abstract concepts and giving students practical strategies for working with fractions, decimals, percents, variables in prealgebra and algebra, and applying numbers and operations correctly to word problems. (I've also learned how to decode Common Core modules into more workable language!)

It's not enough to simply make your essays understood. They need to grab the reader and drive your points home from the opening sentence. I've been writing, editing, and coaching essay prep for more than 20 years, and I can help you learn to analyze prompts, organize your response, and ramp up your vocabulary and phrasing to make your writing SING. Yes, you ARE a good writer! (PS, it's never too early--or too late--to get started!)

I'm a NYS certified teacher with a master's degree and 7 years of classroom experience. For the last 3 years, I have taught in a 5th grade inclusion classroom, seeing to the needs of ADD/ADHD children. I work with kids on focus-refocus techniques; setting time schedules and incremental goals, incorporate physical activity and art activities into academic work, and use breaks and rewards to maintain direction and task commitment. In a tutoring relationship, the tutor and student set goals together and lay out a plan to get there. Both refer back to the plan throughout the lesson to make sure we are on track.

Matt is the best.

We've tried several tutors for my 8th grade daughter. Matt is simply the best. Patient, understanding, flexible. I can't recommend him more highly. Initially we worked with him in English and writing but he's been able to help with science and Math as well. We needed someone who would really take the time to understand our daughter and her learning style. Matt did. He's a rare find and a great person too.
