About Michelle

Bio

I have taught English and history in grades 6 through 12 and enjoy working with students in a tutoring environment. I am certified in both subjects and can offer real help in writing, especially essay writing for English or social studies. Although not certified in special education, I do enjoy working with special needs students.

Grammar

Grammar

Beyond my English certification, I grew up at a time when grammar was highly emphasized in school. The rules, drilled in early, have stayed with me. I have worked professionally as a technical writer. With patience (and not drilling), I can pass these skills along.

Phonics,

Phonics

I was very successful in teaching my own sons to read using my own phonics methods. My oldest son read at 4, my middle son at 3, and my youngest, who has Down Syndrome, at 6. Reading is one of my life's passions. My methods worked well with my sons. I believe they would work with struggling readers. As an English teacher, I have worked with many reluctant readers.
Reading,

Reading

Although I am not a reading specialist, I have helped many students with their reading skills. I've also helped them find things they like to read even when they assure me that they hate to read. I taught my own sons to read; they read early and well. Learning to read well is essential; I am a patient advocate for the process.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

As a certified English teacher, I am qualified to teach vocabulary. It is a standard part of most English curricula. From my own academic background, I bring a good knowledge of Latin and other word roots. I do not rely on memorization of words and definitions. I strive to have students both understand the origin of words and what can be learned from context.

English

English

I am a certified English teacher and have taught both at the junior and senior high school level. I have worked as an ELA coach helping teachers improve their methods. I have also worked as a technical writer. I have worked one on one with students learning English as well.

Literature,

Literature

I have taught many literature classes over the years from ancient greek classics, to Renaissance literature and Shakespeare, to contemporary poetry and drama. I've taught much of it and love all of it. Students can struggle with "serious" literature; I can help them.

Writing

Writing

As an English and Social Studies teacher, I have had many opportunities to teach writing, particularly that required by New York State Regents exams. Students are often resistant to writing, but I find they do better in a one-to-one unpressured environment. Because I have worked as a technical writer in the past, I appreciate clear, straightforward writing. This is what I like to instill in my students.

History

American History,

American History

I am a certified social studies teacher in New York and have taught American History as well as American Studies at the high school level. My bachelor's and master's degrees are both in History. As a lover of history, I make an effort to keep up with new histories and biographies.
European History,

European History

I am a certified social studies teacher in New York and have taught Western Civilization and Global Studies. Both of these incorporate European history. I am a life-long lover of history and enjoy making it come alive for student.
Geography,

Geography

Geography has a large position in the Global History and Geography curriculum. I have taught that course in New York for six years and Western Civilization, also with an emphasis on geography, for another five. However, my real love of geography came from games around the dinner table growing up. Few things cheer me up like a great map!
Government & Politics,

Government & Politics

New York Social Studies certification gives me the "official" qualifications for Government and Politics, and I have taught Participation in Government. This is New York State's twelfth grade requirement. My unofficial qualifications are having grown up in the 60's and 70's in a very politically oriented family.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I have permanent NYS certification in Social Studies, grades 7-12. Although I never applied for it, I also met the requirements for the grade 5-6 extension.

Special Needs

Because I have a son with Down Syndrome whom I helped with many aspects of his education including teaching him to read, I believe I can help students with special needs in a tutoring environment. Also, I have co-taught with special education teachers and have learned many lesson adaptations from them.
