Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anatomy

I have my Associates Degree in Math and Sciences from Westchester Community College, and I am willing to teach your child to learn about the human body and discuss anatomy and physiology, along with biology, and general science. I will explain the functions and the need for understanding the human body, as well as learning nutrition.

Biology

I also have my Associates Degree in Math and Sciences from Westchester Community College. I sincerely enjoy Science, and taking several classes including Anatomy and Physiology I and II, and working in a medical office I have knowledge to help your student accomplish the tasks necessary to guide him/her through a challenging subject.

Classics

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English Literature and I have knowledge in several English and American literature books, as well as poetry books.

As a student and educator, I am familiar with Classics such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, Sherlock Holmes, Heidi, Swiss Family Robinson, King Arthur, Treasure Island, Little Women, The Prince and the Pauper, Around the World in Eighty Days, Robinson Crusoe, Oliver Twist, as well as many others, including trade books.

I would be an asset for those students taking an AP English course and preparing for the SAT, including the writing of essays.

Dyslexia

I am certified in the Wilson Reading Program, in Steps 1-6. I also have training in the "Just Words" program, grades 4-8. In addition, I have training in the Orton-Gillingham method and PAF (Preventing Academic Failure).

I am able to tutor students who have dyslexia. Dyslexic students will be presented with necessary skills and strategies to help them learn reading. I can offer my services in the Wilson Reading Program and through my experience.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am New York certified in Elementary Education, N-6. I am certified in Literacy, K-12, as well.

To learn the basic foundations of reading, one needs to hone in on these skills while learning sounds and segmentation of words. As a literacy specialist, I can teach your child the fundamentals of language. They will be able to understand the basics of sounds and phonemes, which introduces them to a whole new world of learning for them to utilize phonics in numerous ways. It is my goal to teach from "soup to nuts," and provide the necessary background to grow to love words.

English

I am a certified English teacher who has received my TESOL certificate as well. I am familiar with the English language and also have worked with multi-sensory strategies and practices. I have obtained my Creative Writing MFA recently and would work with students to improve their writing skills in their projects.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked with all ages to help teach the English language, and I have the credentials of teaching English as a second language. The people that I have worked with have learned the basics, as well as the advanced levels of English.
From children to adults, I teach students who are advancing to Kindergarten or moving up to the college level in their studies. I would like to provide you and your student the necessary tools for practicing the English language from beginning to end successfully.

Grammar

My background is in English Literature with a concentration in Writing. I have the knowledge to teach the basics of the English language, and the morphology of English. I am able to teach English to students who are struggling with the structure of the sentence, as well as the deciphering of words. The English language is fascinating and challenging. My skills to teach English would benefit the student to become a more diverse reader and writer. Through the necessary exercises and strategies, the student would become successful and confident by expanding his/her vocabulary, decoding, comprehension, and fluency combined. These lessons are designed to help students of all ages reach their highest abilities and potentials.

Handwriting

I am a qualified reading teacher. As you know, reading and writing go hand in hand. I have practiced throughout the years with students to make their handwriting legible and after practice they build their skills in becoming fluid in writing skills, as well as becoming comfortable with their own style. The techniques that are taught can be used for any grade level, whether it be just learning to write or the more advanced writer.

Phonics

I have the basic understanding of phonics/phonemes that would help the student learn the fundamental basics of reading and also develop their comprehension and fluency skills, with the vocabulary sounds and chunking words together we can build an understanding of new words. Phonics are the fundamentals of words, and as a reading teacher for many years I have the expertise to help your student grow through the beginnings of phonics and sounds with an understanding of the English language.

Reading

I have been a reading teacher for over nine years and I am interested in helping you/your child in developing life-long skills in reading. I can offer you many strategies to help their critical thinking skills and in all content areas.
My expertise includes working with students from prek, kindergarten through high school. I can help you to be successful.
