I am a certified math teacher and have ten years of tutoring experience, both privately and for the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake School District. I work with students from middle school to college level, and work to create a comfortable student-tutor working relationship which allows for productive learning.
The new Common Core Learning Standards and high stakes testing require that students have a very good understanding of mathematics. As well as focusing on the mechanics of math, I help students to understand concepts. This is essential in order for them to know when to use which technique. There are a number of repeated 'themes' in math which recur as students progress through math courses, and I bring this to their attention. When similarities are pointed out, this helps to reduce anxiety, allowing the student to focus on learning. In addition, I work with students on reading comprehension of word problems, since this is frequently an area of difficulty, particularly with the Common Core content and testing. I teach reading and problem solving strategies to help students to break down word problems effectively and be sure to answer the question that was asked. One of my primary goals is to help students feel more confident and capable in both math and testing situations.
Currently, I am available on Saturdays for tutoring. I usually begin new tutoring jobs at the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Community Library.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
