About Darryl

Communication is my passion. I am intensely motivated to maximizing my students' abilities in communication of any kind, whether it be through writing an English paper, acting, foreign language, or public speaking.

I have recently relocated from Los Angeles, where I spent the last three years teaching professional actors (adults and teens) at one of the top acting studios in LA. I have a real passion for teaching, which translates into a renewed excitement in my students in whatever subject they are learning. I have clients who I coach in NYC, LA, and the UK, many of whom regularly book TV, film, and theatre jobs.

As a middle and high schooler, I found a love for foreign language, and therefore attended French summer immersion programs until I was book-fluent in the language by my sophomore year of high school. I then decided to spend 11 months as an exchange student in France my junior year, so that I was able to become even more conversationally fluent.

Because of my love of language and communication, I am a voracious reader and always curious about new vocabulary. As an acting teacher, most of my job was helping people communicate with strength, clarity, and strong intention. This translates into helping people not only with acting, but with public speaking, or communicating through the written word.

I keep my students challenged while also teaching the skills needed to become a life-long learner. When learning a new skill we often become frustrated and too hard on ourselves, which then makes us want to quit. My job as a teacher is to find that balance between pushing a student to achieve their best while also giving them the support they need to stay motivated to learn, even while dealing with challenging material. I'm extremely patient with a very warm and supportive approach.

I'm usually available from about 10am-5pm daily, either in person (whether at my home studio or traveling to you) or online. I am also an actor and have been acting professionally on Broadway, TV, and regionally for the last nineteen years.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

Throughout middle and high school, having discovered a passion for learning languages, I attended several years of language immersion programs and thus was book-fluent in French by the age of 15. It was then that I took my language skills to the next level by becoming an exchange student in France for 11 months which solidified my fluency in the language.

I have been told by native speakers that I have little to no accent when I speak French. Being a teacher, I also have a very patient and warm approach to tutoring.

Public Speaking

For the past three years, I was an acting teacher at Margie Haber Studio, one of Los Angeles' top acting studios. In teaching acting to both professional actors and beginners, I stressed clarity of communication, diction, speaking with intention, understanding who you are speaking to, breathing, physical expressiveness, and many other skills that are needed for public speaking. I also have been a professional actor for the last nineteen years and therefore have first-hand experience with public speaking and what it takes to maximize those skills in others.

Theatre

I have been a working professional actor for the last nineteen years, having been in two Broadway shows in NYC (Mamma Mia! and Bombay Dreams) and the first national tour of Spamalot. I have a BFA in Musical Theatre from the University of Michigan. I also taught acting for three years at one of the top acting studios in LA, Margie Haber Studio.
