About Tom

For me, the purpose of education is to create situations which enable students to develop the skills, the knowledge, and the attitudes that will allow them to be responsible, contributing members of society. English language fluency and cultural competence are becoming more and more central and necessary skills in our increasingly smaller world. To this end I believe in active learning in authentic contexts. I firmly feel that students should be willful and motivated participants in their own education.

I have been teaching ESL for five years; two at a tutoring school for children in Taiwan, and more recently, three as an adjunct instructor at the English Language Institute at the University at Buffalo (UB). I received my M.Ed in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) from UB in the spring of 2013.

I am generally available everyday after 3PM and can travel to meet students, or hold classes online. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching ESL for five years now; two years at a tutoring school in Taiwan, and three years at the English Language Institute at the University at Buffalo (UB), where I received my M.Ed in ESOL in 2013. During my time teaching at UB I have tutored a number of international students, focusing primarily on speaking, pronunciation, and TOEFL preparation.

Grammar

I have been teaching ESL for five years now; two years at a tutoring school in Taiwan, and three years at the English Language Institute (ELI) at the University at Buffalo (UB), where I received my M.Ed in ESOL in 2013. My graduate studies included a number of applied grammar and linguistics courses. I have taught grammar and writing courses at the ELI over the past three years.

TOEFL

As an instructor at the English Language Institute at the University at Buffalo, I have helped many students prepare for and pass both the iBT and the institutional TOEFL.
