As an elementary reading teacher for over 20 years, I have always been guided by belief in the natural creativity and potential in all children. I believe that the essence of all literacy is communication, which is natural for children and should be a joyful way to help them grow and define themselves in the world. Developing confidence in reading and writing is essential to children's motivation and enjoyment of school.
Working in the public schools, I have had the benefit of training by many of the most widely respected experts in the field of teaching of literacy. As a tutor, I continue to apply the “Best Practice” methods in reading, writing, assessment and remediation. Since reading and writing improve with regular practice, I expect students to practice at home between sessions. Solid growth in skills, comprehension and confidence are greatly improved by the participation of a parent or special grown-up.
I prefer to work in a local library, but I will be happy to discuss other locations, if desired. I request a 24 hour cancellation policy, and will always try to reschedule when possible.
Please feel free to contact me if you wish further information or to schedule a tutoring session. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a public elementary reading teacher for twenty-two years I have had extensive training in the methods of prominent experts in assessing and teaching phonics as an essential part of teaching reading and writing. I will be happy to discuss this in greater detail, if you are interested.
I have been a certified Reading Teacher for the State of New York since 1992. I retired from a School district in 2014, after working as a full time reading specialist for 18 years. I was employed by Buffalo Public Schools from 1992 to 1996. In my position as a reading specialist, I have received many hours of professional training in assessment, instruction and remediation from numerous highly regarded leaders in the field of literacy education.
As a public school teacher, I have been trained in and utilized the methods of major experts in integrating teaching of spelling with the "best practice" teaching of reading and writing.
