I currently work a flexed 30 hr/ week schedule visiting parents of children with disabilities through a non-profit agency in the Buffalo, NY area. Our goal is to improve the abilities of these children so they can attend public education classrooms. By working with the parents and the teachers, our success rate is astounding! I have learned invaluable life lessons from our population, especially the varied refugees now flooding our school.
I received my BS from SUNY Empire State College while working as a special education assistant for the KenTon School District. I was awarded a graduate assitantship from SUNY Buffalo State College and completed MS there through a grant for Integrating special needs students in typical classrooms.
In the past, I have worked in self-contained Public school situations & integrated classrooms at a local highly successful Charter School in the Buffalo area.
I also tutor for KenTon School district on an as needed basis. I am comfortable working in the home with students and parents or at a local library. Hours can be arranged to fit most schedules, after school or evenings, M - Th. I prefer to keep weekends to my own family. I
I hold a permanent certification in Special Education grades K - 12, BS in Humanities and MS in Special Education. I have worked in typical education settings as well as special education and understand the needs of teachers as well as students in both areas. Through a schedule of planned lessons, play activities, hands-on activities, mutual respect, quality education can be achieved, I include parent participation in all areas and expect daily/weekly communication between classroom and home.
With the use of computers some feel it unnecessary to develop legible handwriting. I still feel there is a need to develop good penmanship & have worked with Occupational Therapists to discover ways to overcome poor handwriting techniques. I have worked as a self-contained classroom teacher and consultant teacher in integrated elementary classrooms 1-6 . Currently, I work with many preschool and kindergarten special education students to develop strategies to overcome inappropriate behaviors so they may be included in public school education.
I learned to read with the phonics system & believe it to be the best method, however, not the only approach to beginning reading of English. I have been trained in the various modallities through the Wilson Reading Tutor program. By using blended sounds, games, sight words, reading can be learned without stress.
