In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
During my student teaching placements, I worked extensively with the kindergarten and the 1st grade common core. I planned lessons that aligned with the common core and taught them to a full class. I am currently a substitute teacher and have followed Common Core module lessons from grades pre-k to 6th in order to teach the material to the class.
My education coursework at SUNY Fredonia included several literacy courses that taught about the components of phonics. These classes also taught methods to teach phonics and other literacy skills to children. During student teaching and substitute teaching, I have taught numerous Orton Gillingham lessons, which is a program that teaches reading through phonics rules.
