Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a NY State certified elementary school teacher. I've taught grades K-12 and over however in various subjects.

Literature

Literature is my ultimate area, my major in college. My way of teaching this subject, as with all subjects is to make learning as fun as possible. Because I'm a big believer in multiple intelligences, I like to first find a person's personal best way to learn, then approach the subject methodically. My personality is sunny, optimistic, and gentle, although I can be strict if a student isn't trying.

In addition to college, I've published and currently work for a few publishers. Along with teaching, writing, grammar, and literature are my passions.

Phonics

From working with students learning to read, I've found phonics is necessary. Once they learn the basics, phonics allow them to figure words out without the aide of someone else. Phonics enable students to decode.

I've worked in the remedial reading room at a public school where phonics greatly helped students.

As a teacher, I've used phonics in my classrooms too.

Public Speaking

I am used to speaking to large groups because I'm a teacher and I've taken public speaking classes in college. Also in college, I had to constantly give presentations in literature, education, and other classes. Students I tutor will benefit from my experience and receive preparation ideas, tips, and practice.

Study Skills

Study skills make all the difference in how well one does in a subject. A teacher and/or tutor is useless without a student studying on their own. They have to want to do well.

Often, going over the material, researching and practicing is necessary. This is why homework is often given.
