Daemen College (Education)
Medaille College (MEd)
I obtained my bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and Inclusive Special Education at Daemen College in 2006, graduating Summa Cum Laude. In December 2007, I completed my coursework for my Master's Degree in Literacy (Birth-6th grade).
I currently hold NYS Teaching certificates for Early Childhood (Birth-2nd grade), Students with Disabilities (Birth-2nd grade), and Literacy, Birth-6th grade.
I have 9 years of professional teaching experience. My duties have included preschool, Spanish (for early kindergartners), and 6th grade reading, 1st grade, and 2nd grade. Also during my employment, I've tutored (during school hours) children in all grades K-7 in a variety of subject areas. I have also tutored (in reading) 1st and 5th graders outside of school hours, and separate from my employment duties at my school. In addition, I worked for 3 years in a school for children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities, so I am well-versed in how to adapt teaching strategies to adjust for different types of learners.
My teaching style is relaxed and fun, but I always get the work done. Children learn better if they're having fun while they're working. Sometimes they don't even know they're learning, but they are! Especially in the early years, any education experiences should be just as fun as they are educational.
My listed availability is what I would prefer, however, I am willing to be flexible on an individual basis, as long as it doesn't interfere with my "day job." In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been drawing since I was very young. I have always been very good at drawing cartoons -- I can draw any cartoon character out there. Over the last 7-8 years, I have developed my ability to draw pencil reditions of photographs and other real items. I feel that my self-taught experience will allow me to assit any child in learning how to draw both cartoons and realistic subjects.
I am certified to teach in NYS early childhood (birth-2nd grade) as well as Literacy through 6th grade. I have passed all NYS general and content-specific tests for the grades K-6.
Additionally, I have extensive experience (both through college placements as well as paid work experience) in grades K, 1, 2, and 6. I have additional experience with tutoring children in all grades K-6.
I also have experience working with children with special needs. I spent three years working in a school specifically for students with moderate to severe developmental disabilities.
Powerpoint is becoming a standard even in elementary schools -- many students will be required, at some point, to develop a powerpoint presentation for a grade.
I have a great deal of experience creating and showing powerpoint presentations. Throughout my undergraduate and graduate schooling, we were required to use powerpoint for many presentations.
I spent a combined 4 years teaching 1st and 2nd grade, which are very strong in the phonics component. I have also taught preschool, where one of the main focuses is phonics. I am very confident that I can assist any child in the development of phonics skills. I obtained my bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education and Inclusive Special Education at Daemen College.
I hold a NYS certification in Literacy (which includes reading, writing, listening, and speaking) for birth-6th grade. I have a great deal of experience assessing students in reading development and using the results to tailor learning experiences for each individual child.
I have taught for nine years, all subjects, and within every subject there is vocabulary instruction. I am well-versed in various ways of presenting vocabulary in order for it to be retained and utilized by the students.
