Vanessa is a film director, writer, and programmer, based in Brooklyn, NY. She makes movies about how it's hard to deal with our feelings and runs development labs and markets to help other people get their movies made. She has a PhD in Communications and loves supporting young thinkers and creatives with their journeys of self expression. She is currently Programming Director for WIFTV’s Genre Film Lab. She is the former Programming Director for Frontières Int. Co-pro Market and Head of Development for Brooklyn based Documentary Prod-co Hard Working Movies. She just completed her first fiction short film (Foot Trouble, 2022) that is currently being submitted to festivals. Most importantly, she loves being organized, making jokes, and sharing her knowledge while learning from others.
Having received my PhD in Communications and Media Studies from Concordia University in 2020 I have spent many years honing my own personal writing style but also learning the specific tools and methodologies one needs to write successfully at a top academic level. I have also worked in Film and Television, as well as in the creative arts, for over ten years and as such have learned both professional grant writing skills and storytelling skills. I am myself a passionate writer (with a particular interest in personal storytelling and autoethnography) and am deeply invested in helping others to hone their craft and express themselves to the best of their abilities.
At a graduate level I have taught Communication, Media Studies and Critical Art Theory courses.
Please reach out to me regarding any of the fields I have listed and if you are unsure if my experience fits what you are looking for you can reach out with any questions. I am open to working with both students interested in support with coursework as well as helping early career or emerging creatives looking for tutoring for professional development purposes.
Wishing you all the best and hope to work with you soon! :)
