Hi there, I'm Kathleen! I graduated cum laude from the University of Miami, earning a BA in English and criminology as well as a minor in music business and entertainment industries. Hi there, I'm Kathleen! I graduated cum laude from the University of Miami, earning a BA in English and criminology as well as a minor in music business and entertainment industries. During my undergraduate career, I made the President’s List, Provost’s Honor Roll, and Dean’s List, and I was the recipient of the Dean’s Scholarship and Florida Academic Scholars Award. My favorite classes covered Jacobean literature, satire, and the works of Virginia Woolf.

At University College London, I received my MA in electronic communication and publishing and was awarded Highest Distinction for my dissertation on how police departments can use social media to help find the missing mentally ill. My coursework at UCL included librarianship, academic journals, and CSS/HTML5.

From 2014 to 2016, I served as a permanent substitute teacher, working with freshmen, juniors, and incoming high school students. We reviewed works like Beowulf, the Canterbury Tales, Romeo & Juliet, short stories by authors like Shirley Jackson and Kurt Vonnegut, and poetry by writers from John Donne to Langston Hughes. We also worked extensively on vocabulary and general writing skills.

Since 2009, I've privately tutored students in the US and UK in a variety of subjects, including (but not limited to) elementary, middle, and high school English literature & comprehension, social studies, math, and SAT prep. I am in the process of earning teaching certification for English 6-12.

I'd love the opportunity to work with you and help you succeed in the classroom and beyond. I believe that with some effort and direction, every student has the ability to thrive, no matter their learning style. I teach my students to read between the lines and think critically, helping them build a solid vocabulary, form a good grammatical foundation, and utilize tools to identify textual evidence. I take my time to adapt to every student's specific needs and always aim to make my lessons both fun and informative.

I am a patient, caring tutor who loves learning new languages and is passionate about helping others build confidence as they develop vocabulary, grammar, reading, and writing skills. I spent several years working with an ESL student who arrived to the US from Chile speaking little English. I used the direct/natural method of teaching new languages, speaking almost entirely in English and focusing initially on conversations, then moving on to reading and writing. When we started working together, she was in middle school and required help in all her classes. We met every day after school and while she was initially very hesitant and self-conscious, she soon developed a strong vocabulary and a solid grasp on grammar, and her confidence increased dramatically. By working hard, she was able to pass the entrance exam to get into a great high school, and she continued to make tremendous progress and now speaks English fluently. During this time, I also worked with her Spanish-speaking mother on her conversation and writing skills. We still keep in touch, and they have continued to flourish academically and professionally.

In addition to my experience writing for newspapers, online magazines, and blogs, I spent years freelancing as a proofreader and copy editor in the US and UK for nationally recognized outlets like the Village Voice newspapers, mental_floss, and Bearded Magazine. I have also done extensive proofreading (including proper grammar and style usage) in my capacity as a high school teacher, paralegal, and content developer over recent years.
