My name is Nick, and I am a guitarist and composer, originally hailing from Australia! I have lived in New York for four years now, and am excited to continue my passion for music and educating! Though I love to perform and compose, I have also spent eight years teaching and tutoring within music; with a focus on guitar (beginner to advanced, any level!), music theory and composition. I am fond of many different types of music - I grew up with classic rock and pop music but jazz and improvised music is my primary love and focus.

I am acutely aware of the importance educators had on my development as a musician and artist, without which I wouldn't be where I am today. Therefore I feel it is a responsibility, and a great one at that, to continue in this tradition. The arts are often sadly neglected in mainstream education - a true disservice to our development as individuals and members of the greater society in my opinion. I hope to be a proponent of change in this way.

I completed a Bachelor of Music (Performance) in 2016 at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, in my hometown of Adelaide, South Australia. In 2019, I graduated from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music's Masters of Music (Jazz Arts) program. I have taught in many institutions, both in New York and my native Australia. I have had experience in music centers, elementary and high schools, and colleges - providing me with a broad grasp of successful approaches in teaching students of widely varying age groups, levels and passions.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch with me. I would love to discuss with you further, on how I can best help you achieve whatever musical goal you might have!

Composition (Music)

Composition (Music)

I began composing almost as early as I began to perform. Composing music has been a consistent mainstay of my creative output, and one that I cherish dearly. In 2015 I was the recipient of a significant youth performance scholarship award in South Australia. This allowed me to compose, record and produce my debut album as a leader, 'As It Was', in 2016. Once I moved to New York to engage in the Master's degree at Manhattan School of Music, I was fortunate to receive tutelage of an extremely high level on techniques of composition - as well as taking electives in important foundational subjects like classical music analysis, and traditional counterpoint. In 2018, I was the co-recipient of a funded Fellowship, that allowed me to travel to Europe, engage in a compositional mentorship (with well-reputed Dutch composer, Reinier Baas), and then return to South Australia to record a co-written album-length suite, 'Woman In The Stars' (my second release). The band featured a full horn section, rhythm section, and string quartet. In teaching privately, I have always considered composition (and songwriting) to be of great import to a developing musician. My experiences as a student and professional are a cornerstone in my own teaching.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

In holding a Master's education, Ear Training is a skill that all students must have at a measurably high level. I have consistently tested out of any required college-level ear training classes (which means that I am at a level that more than satisfies the level of my education). Furthermore - in my professional experience as an improvising musician, the ears and their relationship to music is one of the most important assets. Responding to one another with sensitivity and musicality in real-time requires a very strong focus on the ear. I have taught ear training to students on more than several occasions. I test for intervals, chords, melodic and rhythmic dictation, as well as more advanced concepts. Though I also have games and challenges for younger beginning students using more general musical concepts identifiable by the ear.
Guitar,

Guitar

Since 2013, I began performing professionally on guitar as both a sideman and bandleader. My primary focus is playing styles specific to jazz and improvised music, though I also have experience playing guitar in rock and pop contexts. I also hold a Master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music in Performance.

Another Lesson Finished!

Another lesson in the books, and more material and knowledge to take in and practice. I’ve made a lot of progress so far with Nicholas with previous lessons, especially techniques and playing the correct way. The planned lessons are really beneficial for saving time and keeping organized!

Knowledgeable Teacher

My daughter wanted to no only learn to play the guitar, but read music as well. Nick created a lesson that gave her a little bit of each. The lesson was understandable and kept her attention.

Nicholas was very patient and organized with all lessons so far, having planned things for current lessons to go over as well as for upcoming lessons, and giving tips and techniques to work on to prepare for them
