I have extensive experience as a private tutor, specializing in standardized testing, including (but not limited to) the SAT, PSAT, SHSAT, ACT and ISEE. I've worked with students from across the country of different ages and academic backgrounds to help all of them achieve their academic goals. As someone who himself graduated from a highly competitive high school and went on to study at a prestigious liberal arts college, I know firsthand what it takes for today's students to realize their full academic potential.

I work with the top tutoring agencies in New York City. Here on Wyzant, you have the opportunity to hire me for a fraction of the rate that the agencies charge for my services :)

Prior to my career as a tutor, I worked as a full-time teaching assistant for Middlebury College's department of Film & Media Culture where I taught film production to matriculated students. I later worked for a tech startup in New York City for a close to a decade, helping to grow the company from 15 employees to more than 500. I also have experience working with young people as a summer camp counselor and snowboarding instructor.

Aside from tutoring, my interests include writing, photography, gaming and baseball. I'm also an avid traveler and have visited over 40 different countries to date!

Thanks for taking the time to look at my profile. If you have any questions whatsoever, feel free to reach out to me. I'm always quick to respond to inquiries!

I began studying Spanish when I was in 6th grade and went on to become fully fluent, studying it throughout middle school, high school and college. In 2006-2007, I directly enrolled at the University of Havana in Havana, Cuba where I spent two semesters studying entirely in Spanish. I received a minor in Spanish from Middlebury College, which is one of the most important higher learning institutions for foreign language in the U.S.

I received a perfect score (800) on the Reading/Writing and Language section of the SAT and am an expert at teaching various test-taking strategies to help students excel on this portion of the test. I am also an alumnus of Middlebury College where I majored in English and received departmental honors for my senior thesis. I also attended the graduate studies program at the Bread Loaf School of English for one summer and was invited to attend to attend the Bread Loaf Writers Conference for my work in fiction.

As a student, I scored a 720 on the SAT Essay and went on to attend Middlebury College where I majored in English with a focus on creative writing. In 2007, I was invited to attend the prestigious Bread Loaf Writers Conference where I workshopped a short story of mine with some of the most promising young writers in the US. After college, I worked for a popular website where I was a regular contributor, publishing film criticism.

SAT Math,

SAT Math

Even though I scored a perfect 800 on the SAT in Math, believe it or not, math didn't come entirely naturally to me as a student. It was through persistence and quality tutoring that I was able to achieve this goal. It is this very mentality that I strive to bring to each of my students so that they may achieve their own goals. Contrary to popular belief, the SAT Math section does not test students on highly advanced mathematical concepts, nor does it draw from an infinite amount of material. Instead, the SAT covers a very finite number of concepts, the most advanced of which is basic trigonometry. For each student, I focus on identifying which concepts are presenting the most difficulty to the student and work toward building the student's proficiency and confidence in those specific areas. Beyond that, I put a lot of focus on test-taking strategy, showing each student different trends and shortcuts to maximize their chances of improving their score.

I've successfully tutored more than a dozen students for the Lower, Middle and Upper ISEE to help them gain entrance to highly competitive independent schools. My approach focuses not only on the underlying material in each test, but also a variety of test-taking techniques that help keep students focused and confident on test day. The ISEE is one of my favorite tests to tutor!

Excellent writing tutor

Sam has been working on creative writing with my 8th grader (daughter) for over 8 months. She loves their sessions and has learned a ton! He's patient and knowledgeable. He's a great teacher. My daughter has learned various techniques and ideas to enhance her writing and is starting a few bigger writing projects. Even though it's an extra hour (per week) out of her busy week, she looks forward to the sessions and is eager to continue improving and writing.

Great teacher!

Sam is very engaging and relatable, I never feel bored when in sessions with him, and always makes sure I know the content before moving on, no matter how long I take!

Amazing tutor!!

I’ve had a couple lessons with Sam and he’s really such a great tutor. In just a small amount of time I’ve already learned so much from him and he’s really good at explaining the material in different ways if you don’t understand. He’s also so nice and really cares about his students. Really recommend!!!

Understanding, and overall very helpful

Further explained grammar issues and other questions and tricks specific to the SAT. Overall, I learned a sizable amount about the writing portion on the SAT, and feel more confident in approaching the test.
