I am currently a teacher at a private school, looking to tutor on the side. I studied early childhood education and special education at New York University with a minor in English. I have been working in New York City schools for five years, and have worked with a diverse range of students.

My strongest teaching subject is literacy (reading, writing, and phonics), but I have experience teaching and tutoring in all subjects including math, science, and social studies. I have designed lessons and run assessments in math and reading, and I have a working knowledge of the math, reading, and phonics curriculums used in New York City.

Although it wasn't my favorite subject in school, I have always been a solid math student. Math came naturally to me, and I always enjoyed a mathematical puzzle or challenge. As a university student, my studies involved considering math as a teacher and making it engaging and meaningful for all students. I learned about the progression of mathematical understanding and the obstacles that students generally face. Having worked in many schools in New York City, I am familiar with most of the math curriculum used in New York (including Terk Explorations, Singapore, Math in Context, Investigations, etc).

In college I minored in English, and reading and writing has always been a passion of mine. I've taught direct phonics instruction, early reading strategies, reading for English Language Learners, and comprehension. I am familiar with the academic texts students read, and with the popular best sellers. I've designed and implemented successful reading interventions for struggling readers, and I love to see a student blossom into an enthusiastic and capable reader.

Although I love the challenges and rewards of working in a classroom setting, I also enjoy the benefits of working one on one with a student and truly getting to know them, which is why I wanted to take on tutoring on the side. Watching students grow and learn is a truly rewarding experience that allows me to grow and le

I studied art seriously in high school, and was accepted into several arts colleges in illustration and animation departments before deciding to pursue education. I continue to study both independently and in classes, and to practice regularly. I understand the technical aspects of art, and have a decent understanding of art history. I have the most experience in figure drawing and still life, but have done character design, comics, and illustration projects.

Caring and patient, wonderful tutor

Tia has been working with my nine-year-old son for about 4 weeks now and we’ve seen a huge change in his attitude and willingness to work on his homework. Her patience and knowledge as well as experience shone through and it’s been extremely helpful and positive to our son. Tia is absolutely wonderful!
