I grew up a little outside of Boston and recently graduated from Swarthmore College, a small liberal arts school outside of Philadelphia, where I majored in mathematics, minored in music, and ran on the cross country and track teams. I am now an early-career science journalist, informing the general public about important issues such as air and water pollution, climate change, and groundbreaking scientific research. In my spare time I like to play music with friends (I play the cello, guitar, bass, and mandolin, and I sing) and go running with friends.

I have several years of experience tutoring middle and high school students in math classes from Algebra I through Pre-Calculus, mostly assisting students in completing homework assignments, preparing for tests, and understanding material from class. I have also worked as a grader for undergraduate math classes including Single and Multivariable Calculus and Abstract Algebra, for which I gave feedback on and corrected homework assignments, and have been a camp counselor at a math camp for elementary school students. Since I majored in math and have studied other sciences in both undergraduate and graduate school, I can tutor in any math subject from elementary school math through college-level math and statistics courses, as well as high school science courses such as physics, chemistry, and biology. I love to tutor because I love helping someone achieve a breakthrough where they understand something that previously confused them. I find joy in working with students to boost their confidence and their appreciation for and interest in math and science, and I want to help students reach their goals and master the material.

I am a pleasant and patient tutor. I encourage students to work as hard and do as well as possible, but I want the student to be happy and comfortable while doing so. I can help not only with learning material, completing assignments, and preparing for exams, but also with developing strategies for being a successful learner — how to problem solve, what to do when you get stuck, and how to approach new material.

I typically like to begin by having students try out a few different types of problems to understand where the holes in their knowledge lie before leading an interactive lesson with the student where we go over and discuss the underlying fundamentals of the topic they’re studying. Then we’ll try some more problems to make sure the student understands the concepts. The goal is always to build a foundational knowledge that can be applied to as wide a range of problems as possible. But I am flexible in my tutoring style and am willing to support the student in whatever manner is helpful to them. My goal is for the student to have as rewarding and enriching a learning experience as possible.

Please reach out to me if you have any questions about how I can be of help to you or if you’d like to set up a meeting. I look forward to hearing from you!

Patient tutor

We went over basic functions and also went over the domain and range of functions. Studied for my quiz on chapter 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3. Reviewed some precalculus. Also looked at graphs of functions and how to identify and plot them.
