About Manuel

I've been playing drums and percussion since I was 10 years old, although my learning started prior to that; I was living in England when I was 6 years old, when my parents took me to see STOMP, which changed my life and got me into banging pots and pans immediately. My adventure with music started immediately.

Great teachers and mentors have been a fundamental part of my formation as a drummer and musician, but also as a person. I started teaching drums in my senior year in high school, back in Lima, Peru and formed my first band when I was 13. My learning of my instrument involved not only practicing technique, but a fundamental part involved playing with other people, early on, and this is something I encourage my students (this includes playing along to your favorite CD's!).

With my first couple of students, I found myself really enjoying sharing my knowledge of my instrument and watching my students enjoy that feeling of learning something new. Teaching was something I connected with and slowly started to discover my own style and voice as a teacher and communicator of ideas. At the time, I was touring extensively with my Rock band in Lima and also in Mexico, while getting more students, who varied in ages (my youngest student was 5 years old, why my oldest was 26 years old).

In 2010, I entered the "Universidad Catolica del Peru" to begin my Bachelor's Degree in Music. Here I dived into different musical styles such as Jazz, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music, and studied drums with renowned artists such as Hugo Alcazar and Laureano Rigol. Here I also began playing the Peruvian Cajon (an instrument I play for acoustic shows with to this day) and explored more of my songwritting (since I had been playing guitar and writing songs for 5 years). During my time in college I also started teaching groups and guitar students, as well as had one student with special needs and leading a Peruvian Cajon workshop for children.

In 2012 I was accepted into Berklee College of Music and I found myself surrounded by extremely talented musicians from around the globe, in the most creative environment I've every been in so far. I studied drums with teachers such as Bertram Lehmann, Robert Kaufmann and was part of Jazz, Afro Cuban, Afro Pop ensembles. I was also a session and live musician for many students and projects.

In 2014 I joined the band "Amy & The Engine" (now based in NYC), whom with I went back to performing actively, which was something I missed dearly. With the band we played in venues and festivals throughout Boston, New York City, New Hampshire, Maine, Chicago, Nashville including; Brighton Music Hall, The Sinclair, Berklee Performance Center, The Red Room, The Middle East, Pianos, CMJ Music Festival, Rockwood Music Hall, Bowery Electric, Gillette Stadium, Calvin Theater, Old Port Festival, Canadian Music Week, New England Music Awards, amongst many others. We've supported acts such as Rachel Platten, Vance Joy, The Veronicas, Kasey Musgraves, Guster and others.

At this time I also discovered a completely new way of using and connecting with music when I decided to study Music Therapy as a major. This opened a whole new world of possibilities and learning, and I was able to connect with my empathic side when creating music with other people. I was fortunate to work in facilities and organizations such as Boston Children's Hospital, Northshore Consortium, Care Dimensions, Goddard House, Kennedy Longfellow School, amongst others.

I am currently living in Brooklyn, where I moved recently to continue to pursue my career as a performer, music therapist and private instructor.

Please feel free to contact me for private lessons for Drum Set, Cajon (Peruvian and Spanish) and/or guitar. My professional resume is available upon request.
