B.A. UC Berkeley (Cultural Anthro)
University College London (UCL) (Master's)
Hello... I am new to New York, having recently relocated from Oakland, Ca. I worked for 14 years as a professional photographer. I love street photography and documentary photography, as well as portraiture. Black and white was my first love. I also enjoy night photography. I shoot digital, but still love to shoot film. I have far too many cameras- 35 mm's, digital SLR (Canon and Nikon), Hasseblad, and a 4x5 field camera, not to mention plastic toy cameras and pinholes, etc. I have worked for many commercial clients, as well as shooting weddings, family portraits, and plenty of magazine work. I have exhibited my images in London, Berlin, Sundance Utah, and Oakland Ca.
I have traveled to many places and photographed my way around much of the world.
I have studied with incredible photographers- but the best practice is to shoot!! I love to teach and share my experience. I spent a couple of months on a project in India and taught a class of young women every day how to photograph... and also taught young student with disabilities when I was living in the UK. I also lecture at my former University in London once a year on a thesis I completed in India...
I worked professionally, full-time, for 14 years, but have been working as a photographer in total for about 20 years. I focused on visual anthropology in my undergraduate studies, which included studying photography at Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. I have also studied at the California College of Arts (CCA) in Oakland, and worked for and attended many workshops through Fotovision, a non-profit- photographers such as Don McCullin, Joel Meyerowitz, Donna Ferrato, etc. I have also studied documentary film, theoretical and hands on, at UC Berkeley, UCL, and more recently at Laney College. I am currently editing a film I shot and produced for my doc film class.
If you are interested in learning about the history of photography, or hands on shooting, feel free to contact me. Thanks, Sophie Hello... In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have worked professionally since 2000, and studied prior to that. I have worked for national and international publications, such as ELLEgirl, Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic textbooks, Sunday Times Style (UK) and worked in commercial, editorial, and portrait photography. I have also photographed weddings and am commissioned to photograph families. I have taken photography courses at Moorpark College, UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism, University College London, Laney College, California College of the Arts, and with many renowned photographers through Fotovision, an educational photography based non-profit I worked for.
