About Julian

I believe that teaching is a form of listening. Having worked as a teacher and assistant instructor throughout college, I understand that no two students are the same, and that there are many ways to understand a given problem or assignment. Accordingly, my goal as a teacher is to provide students with the tools they need to approach assignments on their own terms, giving them the ability to take ownership of the material they are studying. In my experience, not only do these students receive higher grades, but take pride in the challenge and growth that is offered by education.

This approach to teaching, and learning, comes from personal experience. Growing up in southern California, I was always obsessed with art and art history, as well as reading and creative writing. Since my high school didn't offer art history or creative writing courses, I would come home after sports practice and often spend hours browsing museum websites, watching art documentaries on youtube, or writing short stories. Quickly I became familiar with various art historical periods and movements, and I was also learning how I could use writing as a means to articulate complex ideas. When I got to UC Berkeley as an undergraduate and enrolled in my first art history course, it didn't feel like a class but rather a continuation of my own personal engagement with the material. Not only did I do well in the course, but attending class became a highlight of my day. The same would come later with literature when, although enrolled in the graduate architecture program at Princeton, I took PhD literature courses on writers including William Faulkner and Henry James.

In hindsight, although I had no previous formal training in these subjects, I did well because I was able to take ownership of the material and approach it on a personal level. Its an approach that, whether consciously or not, I have applied to other subjects as well, including physics and math, and which I now try to instill in those who I tutor and teach.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I worked with InDesign for 5 years as an architecture student, and designed / published various books and portfolios.

Architecture

I received an undergraduate degree in architecture from UC Berkeley, as well as a Master of Architecture degree from Princeton. I have also published works in Princeton's School of Architecture journal, as well as worked as an assistant instructor teaching architecture undergraduates at Princeton.
