About Lara

I am a 2016 Amherst College graduate with a BA in Mathematics and Theater & Dance. I have recently move to New York from Naples, FL to pursue my career in playwriting and want to continue my passions in math and education through tutoring! I have spent over 5 years tutoring elementary, middle, and high school students in a variety of subjects including math, English, and French. I have extensive experience preparing young students for upcoming entrance examinations and standardized tests like ERB, SSAT, and SAT. I am also available for editing and helping in the development of papers, creative works, and essays- including college application essay aid. In high school, I scored within the 99th percentile of the SAT and received the AP Scholar Award with distinction. I went on to continue my academic fervor at Amherst College where I majored in Mathematics and Theater & Dance and completed a senior thesis in Playwriting, which was produced by the college and performed on campus. I was also a member of the college's varsity tennis team.

For me, tutoring is all about students building confidence, learning the skills and strategies required to tackle assignments, tests, and questions in the classroom, and practicing and mastering their lifelong, invaluable abilities in problem solving. I prefer working one-on-one with recurring students so that I can tailor my teaching strategy to their individual needs and preferences, and so I can foster a trusting relationship and safe space for each student. One time tutoring sessions will be decided case by case. I am looking for students who have an enthusiasm for learning and a willingness to improve. I also provide young students with strategies for time management and organization, and I offer help to students seeking to better control their test-taking or academic performance anxieties.

Subjects I specialize in include math (elementary level, pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, algebra II, precalculus, trigonometry, calculus, multivariable calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, statistics), English (vocabulary, grammar, writing, literature), and French. I have also previously tutored in multiple AP Courses (AB Calculus, BC Calculus, English Language, English Literature, French Language and Culture, Physics B, and Physics C). My test-prep experience includes ERB Achievement Assessments CPAA, CTP, and WrAP, SSAT, PSAT, ACT, SAT, and SAT Subject Tests (Math I, Math II, US History, Physics, French, and English). I also offer help and advice on college applications and edit college application essays.

I look forward to working with you to improve your performance, confidence, and enthusiasm in the classroom as well as on tests!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Geometry

I've spent the past five years aiding middle and high school students in a variety of mathematics courses like algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. My primary goal is to ensure that my students have a grasp of the material and to build their confidence in the subjects they are studying. With geometry, I help students to remember and understand the ideas behind the many equations they will come across throughout the course, and I advise techniques that help the students write clear and concise proofs that are often required in the course. Most importantly, I provide practice problems for the student and oversee how they work toward the solution. This better helps me understand the student's thought process and allows me to catch any mistakes or confusions the student may be having.

Geometry was my favorite subject in school, and I truly enjoy teaching it. I hope I am fortunate enough to work with you in this subject!

Precalculus

I've spent the past five years aiding middle and high school students in a variety of mathematics courses like algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. My primary goal is to ensure that my students have a grasp of the material and to build their confidence in the subjects they are studying.

It is extraordinarily important for a student to have a good grasp of precalculus as it forms their foundation moving into the harder calculus courses. For me, it is essential for the student to understand how and why they are approaching each problem in a certain way as opposed to memorizing which formulas solve their respective questions.

I majored in mathematics in my undergraduate at Amherst College where I took courses like Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Analysis, and Groups. In high school I took AP Calculus AB and BC.

Calculus is a lot less intimidating than people tend to think, and I'm excited to help you tackle this subject!

SAT Math

The SAT is all about confidence and practice. SAT tutoring sessions start out with the student taking a practice test so that I can see which types of problems they need help on. From there, we will work on those specific types of problems and continue to take practice portions of the exam to see improvement or any other weaknesses.

SAT Writing

The SAT is all about confidence and practice. SAT tutoring sessions start out with the student taking a practice test so that I can see which types of problems they need help on. From there, we will work on those specific types of problems and continue to take practice portions of the exam to see improvement or any other weaknesses. Students will also be given additional essays to practice their proofreading skills. Help for the optional essay portion of the SAT is also available.

Theatre

I majored in Theater & Dance as well as wrote a Playwriting thesis for my undergraduate degree (which was produced by the college and performed for three nights on campus). I have done extensive coursework on this subject including several acting courses, playwriting courses, directing courses, a course on playwright Anton Chekhov, a course on play reading, and courses in scene design and contemporary dance. In addition to this, I have performed in countless school plays, local theater productions, and college productions since I was in elementary school. I am currently pursing a career as a playwright and thus am actively participating in writers workshops, helping other writers with their selected works.

Very thorough, communicative, and flexible!

We called Lara to give my 8th-grade son some one-on-one help preparing for the SHSAT, and he felt that she did a terrific job explaining math concepts that hadn't been clear to him before. She came to our sessions very prepared with problems for him to work on, and also gave him an assignment for the next session. Their time together was very productive. She was also quick to respond to me, and ve
