About Michael

I'm a recent graduate of New York University's MA in Teaching French and TESOL as Foreign Languages with extensive experience teaching and tutoring both French and English. I have taught in both Paris and New York City schools, and worked with a number of different methods and age groups.

Over the years, I have honed a communicative-based approach to foreign language education that centers around creative expression. While I believe that grammar and vocabulary lessons are essential to learning a language, my ultimate goal is to get students comfortable expressing themselves through a variety of fun and engaging activities centered around speaking, listening, and cultural exchange.

A native English speaker, I feel passionately about helping people coming to the United States master English. I see it as an issue of social justice. With a master's degree in TESOL and teaching experience both in the United States and France, I take a patient, research-based, and communicative approach to helping people better speak and understand English.

I have studied French for 16 years, and speak it fluently. I have traveled all over the French speaking world, including spending a year in Paris learning how to teach French. I have tutored French for four years, and student taught it for two.

I'm a passionate and lifelong student of history and politics who hopes to share my love of history with others. As an avid consumer of news, world history, documentaries, and books in the social sciences, I could talk about these topics for hours. I look forward to helping students make better sense of the world in which they live.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I feel that I am qualified to tutor ESL/ESOL because I have a Master's Degree from NYU in specifically that subject. I also have a great deal of experience teaching English, most notably for a whole year at different schools in Paris, France. I was trained in the communicative approach, a method popular in European schools for its emphasis on properly equipping students to be able to express themselves and carry on a conversation in a foreign language.

French

I have been studying French for 16 years, and it's one of my favorite subjects. After taking French through high school and college, I began tutoring it. Recently, I got my Master's degree in Teaching French as a Foreign Language from NYU, a program that, in addition to teaching me wonderful skills in pedagogy and exciting student-teaching experience in French, gave me the opportunity to live and study for a year in Paris. My combination of expertise in French, the pedagogy of teaching it, and experience living, working, and teaching in France make me an exceptional French tutor.
