About Sydney

In my junior and senior year at the University of California, Santa Cruz, I was a peer tutor for Learning Support Services on campus, tutoring other students in Film Critical Theory classes as well as other subjects including, but not limited to, Sociology, Psychology and Philosophy. My primary service is in academic writing assistance, from inception of idea, formation of thesis, research material acquisition and dissemination through fruition of a well-written, logically structured and thought-provoking paper.

In order to retain this position, I was required to take a quarter-long class on Educational Theory as well as attend quarterly weekend training seminars; Therefore, I am familiar with various learning styles (e.g. visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and the fact that different people are different kinds of learners. I am also experienced with rephrasing and reframing ideas to suit different students so that they are best able to relate to seemingly esoteric concepts and so able to fully understand and commit these concepts to their long-term memory and subsequently build on these ideas.

In addition to my tutoring experience, I am also a freelance writer and therefore not only skilled but passionate about the written word and finding its deliberate expression in the specificity of structure and vocabulary.

I graduated with honors in my major, Film and Digital Media Studies, with an emphasis on Production largely as a result of my senior thesis project, a short film which has screened at the Motor City Nightmares Film Festival in Detroit and won the Bronze award at the L.A. Neo Noir festival. The experiences that I have acquired through my film's production (writing, producing, directing, and editing an extremely low-budget short film in a very limited time-frame) have primed me with impeccable communication skills even under extreme duress. I have also taken classes in acting, playwriting, costume and set design in order to understand all sides of the production process.

Feel free to hit me up to discuss your individual needs in order to discern that I am the right tutor for the job :)

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
