About Hannah

I just completed my Masters in Critical Theory and, after several years working in art institutions, am redirecting my path to focus on education. I've come to Wyzant in the hopes of sharing my passion for language and literature in a constructive learning environment with students who need extra support.

I've worked with young children in a variety of educational settings and have some experience with special needs, but am also very tuned in to the challenges, both emotional and social, of middle and high school. No matter the age of my student, I listen closely to their individual needs and tailor my strategies to find what works best for them. I'm not as interested in achieving a certain grade as I am in lasting progress. I'm a deep believer in the power of learning and find that true learning doesn't just serve a student in school but in his or her whole life.

I've been a devourer of books all my life, and since a young age have delighted in playing with language as a writer. My formal education in comparative literature and critical theory have trained me in diverse modes of academic writing. Beyond the hallowed halls, I have written articles for my college newspaper, started a blog of art criticism, and recently worked on an awards-winning museum publication.

I understand that not every student has had the fondness for reading and writing that I have. Ultimately I aspire to inspire my students to see language in all its expressive possibilities.

Whether you need help structuring an English paper, strategies for memorizing vocabulary, or a guide for your reading assignments, I will collaborate with my student and their family to reach toward tangible educational goals.

I am also a history fan and bilingual in French if you need help with those subjects!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Cello

I studied classical cello for 18 years, initially following the Suzuki Method. I would be delighted to help support a budding cellist by improving technique, teaching musical phrasing, and guiding practice strategies.

English

I earned my BA in Comparative Literature with Honors and recently achieved my Masters in Critical Theory with a 4.0. My writing experiences range from fiction writing to helping produce an awards-winning museum catalog. I have diverse experiences with young learners, with whom I've learned patience, optimism, and attention to individual needs. I aspire to help my students succeed in their school writing, and ultimately hope that they'll learn to use writing to express their unique voice. I aspire to help my students succeed in school but also ultimately learn the joys of reading for pleasure.

Literature

With a Bachelors degree in Comparative Literature and a Masters in Critical Theory, I approach the study of literature with a keen analytical eye. From Shakespeare to world literature to modern poetry, I have a wide range of knowledge of the history and theory of literature. As an avid reader and fiction-writer myself, I aim to be my student's enthusiastic guide through the rich world of books.

Hannah is a professional. She brings materials and articles to evaluate the tutee's level. She takes the time to understand what needs to be polished. On her one on one session, Hannah ensures the lesson is understood before moving on. Very articulate and great personality.
