About Luca

I was born in Northern Italy and about nine months ago I moved to New York. I studied languages in high school and gained my BA and MA in art history between Bologna and Rome.

As a student, I started teaching English to friends, mostly for fun, but soon realized that teaching had become a real passion. That passion turn into a profession in the wonderful land of Sicily, where I lived for about a year and a half. There, I mostly worked with young professionals looking for an accessible, immersive method to start speaking English as soon as possible. Helping my students through English was a key experience to shape what I call my Italian survival tutoring course, carefully designed for busy New Yorkers.

Magazines, movies, restaurants, art and music expose all of us to Italian language and culture, we all know and speak a bit of Italian even though we don't realize it. That's our kick starter. We will point out all those words and phrases to examine their meaning and even more importantly, their pronunciation. Fortunately Italian has a quite small set of peculiar sounds, it's important to recognize and pronounce them correctly. Once we build a small collection of words we know, we'll try to give them some structure through basic grammar rules and verbs. Doing so, we'll be able to articulate the first essential sentences; the survival package. With that in our pocket, we'll be able to face basic conversation; ask for directions, order at a restaurant, make reservations.

Visuals will always accompany us, we'll try not only to speak a lot but also to write a lot, that will help information stick to our memory. Images and artworks will be a great way to connect to Italian culture, expand our vocabulary and maybe even discover a bit of Italian art. Ultimately, if you are planning a trip to Rome or Florence, you might want to know something more about Giotto or Raffaello.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
