About Talal

I am currently completing graduate coursework at the University of Oxford towards a MSc in Radiation Biology. Upon completion of the MSc, I will be returning to SUNY Downstate Medical Center to complete my PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology. I completed a BS in Biology and Anthropology at the City College of New York.

Currently, I work at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where I have been for the past 8 years as a Laboratory Manager and am now enrolled as a PhD candidate. I have held an appointment as an Instructional Support Technician at SUNY Downstate in the Division of Radiobiology. As a result, I have extensive experience in the sciences, particularly biotechnology and molecular biology. In addition to managing and designing high level research projects, I am also responsible for training and teaching advanced biology courses to fellows, residents, and medical students, as well as volunteer undergraduate and high school students in the Division of Radiobiology.

I have more than 3 years of private and classroom based tutoring experience working with students of all ages, especially high school and undergraduate students. I am an extremely patient tutor and care about the students understanding the concepts presented to them. Over the years of teaching graduate level material and tutoring students, I have come to love teaching and imparting knowledge to others. My style of teaching is very interactive, visual, and hands on. I stay away from drilling memorization and focus more on concepts based learning as well as ensuring the lessons stay with the students beyond the exams.

As a researcher, I have 8 years of experience in advanced biology and chemistry. My research involves high level organic/biochemistry, as well as complex biotechnology and molecular biology. As a result, in addition to having formal academic training in biology through my undergraduate classes, I have extensive real-world, hands-on biology and chemistry training and expertise. Thus, I offer my students a unique opportunity to learn science from an outside of the classroom perspective.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have completed all my undergraduate requirements to earn my B.A. in Anthropology from the City College of New York. I am waiting on wrapping up my B.S. in Biology in order to receive my actual degree. My training in Anthropology focused primarily on Linguistic and Biophysical anthropology. However, I have taken several courses in cultural anthropology and archaeology.

Archaeology

As an Anthropology major, I have training in archaeological theory, field work training, and training in historical archaeology.

Biology

BS in Biology (Cellular and Molecular//City College of New York)
MSc in Radiation Biology/Radiation Oncology (University of Oxford)
PhD Candidate in Cellular and Molecular Biology (SUNY Downstate Medical Center)

Classics

I studied Latin in high school and college (total of 6 years). During my sudies in Latin, I have studied Grecco-Roman classics including Homer, Caesar, Catullus, Sappho, Herodotus, Thucydides, Virgil, and many more.

Genetics

I am a Biology major, and on top of that have extensive research experience in the field of molecular genetics. I have taken classes in molecular and Mendelian genetics.

Regents

Graduated from the Bronx High School of Science with an Honors Regents Diploma. I have been tutoring students in all regents subjects, with the exception of physics, geometry, and trigonometry, for more than two years.
