About Alex

Hi there,

I'm Alex - and I love teaching, exploring ideas and helping people need me less and less. I'm very proud to have been a part of opening a new school and creating the 9th grade English Curriculum from scratch. I'm also proud to say that our 9th grade students grew, on average, 2 grade levels in reading and many passed the ELA regents while in 9th grade! I'm really good at getting to know the people I teach; I learn what makes you excited to learn and what sparks your interest. I'm interested in teaching you, supporting you, and finding what makes you excited to read and learn.

When I'm not tutoring, I cook and bake snacks. My students earn brownie points for doing great work and they eat a lot of brownies, too. I look forward to supporting your growth.

I was certified to teach English Language Arts from grades 7-12. I have strong skills and knowledge in the following areas: Common Core State Standards, Teaching and Developing key Reading Skills, Argumentative Writing using the Claims, Evidence and Reasoning framework, Experience Teaching Shakespeare and Canonical Literature, Differentiation Strategies for Students on IEP's and English Language Learners and implementing a Culturally Relevant Pedagogy.

I'm excited to meet you and support you as you grow and develop in English Language Arts. Feel free to reach out to me via email to learn more about me, how I can support you and to schedule tutoring times.

Thanks and good luck.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

When in graduate school, I was taught to teach using the Common Core State Standards. While my concentration and focus is in the English Common Core State Standards, I am knowledgeable in the Math and Science standards as I was involved in bringing reading across the curriculum. In order to do so, I worked with the Math and Science departments to bridge the gap by looking at the standards and ways they can incorporate reading in math and science. I was certified to teach English Language Arts from grades 7-12.

Regents

I currently teach courses that culminates in an Common Core English Exam. Of the 60 students that took the exam, only 2 did not pass. Of the 58 students who passed, about 52 of those students at a leveled deemed College and Career ready determined by a score of 75 or higher.

Study Skills

While I taught, I was responsible for study sessions that included built-in troubleshooting sheets. Instead of simply telling them to do their work, I taught them how to develop questions to reexamine their problem. Then, I taught them to look at all of their resources to get to self directed learners.
